At the Gate – Sunday

Dale Romans scratched Free Drop Billy from yesterday’s Fountain of Youth (G2) despite being the third choice on the morning line at 9-2 in favor of running him next Saturday at Aqueduct in the Gotham (G3).

However, that did not stop him from winning the Fountain of Youth.

Romans saddled Promises Fulfilled, who was 20-1 on the morning line and drew the outside post in the field of nine. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. got the colt out quickly from the outside and wired the field, returning $38.40 for the win

The 50 Derby points for the win assure the son of Shackleford would make it to the starting gate in the Run for the Roses.

The colt was making his first start since running third in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) at Churchill Downs last November in his stakes debut. He won his first two starts.

The winner of the Kentucky Jockey Club was Enticed, who ran fourth in the Holy Bull (G2) in his three-year-old debut.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) champ Good Magic was sent off as the chalk, got a perfect tracking trip sitting in third, but that is where he ended up at the wire, with Strike Power, the Swale (G3) winner running second.

We are back in action at Aqueduct today with a good nine race card and the weather is on the improve.

Here is the opening race from Aqueduct to get the day off to a good start:

AQU Race 1 Clm $25,000N3L (1:20 ET)
#4 Curiousncurioser 4-1
#3 Loose 8-5
#5 Asian's Way 5-2
#2 Tiz Super 7-2

Analysis: Curiousncuriouser made a good late rally to finish in the runner up spot last out against $14,000 non-winners of three off a two-month break. The winner Leah's Dream came back to beat state bred $25,000 claimers in her next start on Feb. 8. She was claimed out of the ace by the Arriaga barn that is 15% winners (with a +ROI) first off the claim. There is not much pace in here but this gal looks capable of being closer to the front in this spot.

Loose set the early fractions and was no match for the winner in the stretch in a runner up finish versus $35,000 non-winners of three going a mile. He beat $25,000 non-winners of two here going six furlongs two back and broke her maiden three back at Belmont Park at six furlongs. The cut back in distance will suit the RRod trainee.

Wagering
WIN: #4 to win at 3-1 or better.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Aqueduct:

AQU Race 6 Alw $50,000s (3:54 ET)
#5 Right On 5-1
#7 Paranoia 7-2
#6 Dream Fever 8-1
#1 Cathy Naz 3-1

Analysis: Right On pressed the early pace while down along the rail and weakened in the stretch to finish fourth last out over a wet track going seven panels. She cuts back to six furlongs and adds blinkers here for the Brown barn. She owns solid early and mid pace numbers and with the hood added she is going to be the one to catch. Decent value if she goes off near her 5-1 morning line.

Paranoia exits the same race as our top pick where set the early fractions and battled o gamely, missing by just a neck last out while 6 1/4 lengths clear of the rest of the field. Two back in the slop she pressed the early pace and weakened to finish fourth in the Ruthless. She also will benefit from the cut back to six furlongs. Barker is having a solid meet hitting at a 21% clip with 13 of 28 runners landing in the money.

Wagering
WIN: #5 to win at 7-2 or better.

GP Race 7 Md Sp Wt (3:00 ET)
#5 And Still 5-1
#1 Oroscopo 5-2
#7 Be Gone Daddy 7-2
#4 Mominou 8-1

Analysis: And Still makes his debut for former Pletcher assistant De Paz who is hitting at a 40% clip (with a +ROI) with first time starters. The colt was a $225,000 Ocala purchase, by Violence out of the stakes winner Mother Ruth ($289,243) who was a winner on dirt and the fake stuff. She has dropped one foal to race, two time turf winner Yuvetsi ($85,950). A solid string of works on the morning tab.

Oroscope dueled for the early lead and weakened to finish sixth last out. Two back she ran a race good enough to win here in a runner up finish at 37-1. He breaks for the inside and owns solid early and mid pace numbers. He is out of the stakes winner Schooner Bay ($301,516) who has dropped a pair of winners, top earner stakes winner Indian Pond ($266,122).
