At the Gate – Friday

Our two day “vacation” at Kentucky Downs ended yesterday with a decent day, three winners on top and five recommended exactas, the payoffs $34.80, $29.80, $24.80, $23.60 and $56.80.

We are back in action at Belmont Park on Friday with a solid nine race card and we have a big weekend of stakes action coming up around the country and north of the border.

On Saturday it is the $800,00 Ricoh Woodbine Mile (G1), a Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” race for the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1).

Royal Delta’s little brother Delta Prince is the 5-2 morning line favorite in a field of nine. We have a couple of interesting Euro invaders in Lord Glitters and Stormy Antarctic and there is even a filly in the race, Neil Drysdale sending out La Sardane as he seeks to win a record fourth Woodbine Mile.

The other two Breeders’ Cup Challenge races come at Churchill Downs involving juveniles—the $150,000 Iroquois (G3) for the boys and the $200,000 Pocahontas (G2) for the gals. The winners of those races stamp a free ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) and Juvenile Fillies (G1).

The feature at Belmont Park on Saturday is the $400,000 Sands Point (G2) for three-year-old fillies. Trainer Chad Brown will be represented with three runners—Reversethedecision and a pair of Euro invaders in Barkaa and Shadan.

My Best Plays Report for Saturday will include my strongest plays from Belmont Park and Woodbine as well as the Breeders’ Cup Challenge races from Churchill Downs.

Now is the perfect time to purchase my Monthly Package for just $99.95. It gives you a month of Belmont Park daily and my Best Plays Report each Saturday and Sunday.

Here is the opener from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Clm $12,500 (1:30 ET)
#2 Global Positioning 9-2
#4 Ranger in Paradise 7-5
#1 Old Upstart / 1a Orpheus 2-1
#5 Too Fast to Pass 4-1

Analysis: Global Positioning stalked the early pace and made a mild late bid to finish third last out against $25,000 state breds. The gelding was claimed out of the race by the Tony D. barn that has started just 28 runners this year with a pair of wins. The barn is showing a 1 for 15 mark first off the claim dating back five years. The gelding was productive last year winning four times but is 0 for 8 this year. He has faced mostly tougher and looks like this is a good spot here tagged for $16,000. He was fourth versus state bred Alw-2 optional claimers when last over a fast main track and that was back in May.

Ranger in Paradise tracked the early pace and made a good late rally to finish in the runner up spot last out for this tag. He was claimed out of the race by the Levine barn that is 10% winners first off the claim. This guy owns a solid pace profile throughout and his last three figs are a good fit here, but he has won just once in his last 16 starts and his price is going to be on the light side here.

Wagering
WIN: #2 to win at 4-1 or better.
EX: 2,4 / 1,2,4
TRI: no play

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 7 Alw $50,000s (4:46 ET)
#5 Fast Track Kathern 3-1
#4 Theaterintheround 5-1
#3 Radiant Beauty 10-1
#9 Muchacha Uno 6-1

Analysis: Fast Track Kathern came off a three month break with a win versus $35,000 non-winners of three. The filly got away slowly after stumbling coming out of the gate, got stuck in traffic approaching the quarterpole, split rivals while exchanging a few bumps and drew clear late. She was claimed out of the race by the Nevin barn that is 13% winners (with a +ROI) first off the claim. She is the lone three-time winner in the field and if she moves forward off her last trip she will be very tough to beat in this spot.

Theaterintheround hit the gate at the break which left her at the back of the pack, and she came with a good four wide rally to beat $40,000 non-winners of two last out over good ground at the Spa. She was claimed out of the race by the Handal barn that is 18% winners (with a +ROI) first off the claim. The filly was taken from Brown who is coming off a strong meeting at the Spa. The filly has shown improvement in each outing and may still have some upside.
