At the Gate – Saturday

We have a superb card at Belmont Park this afternoon, 11 races with five graded stakes on tap including a pair of key turf races for three-year-olds.

The $1 million Belmont Derby Invitational (G1) for three-year-olds going 1 ¼ mils on turf is the highlight, drawing a field of 15, with 14 able to start.

The race has an international feel, with trainer Aiden O’Brien sending out Cape of Good Hope and Blenheim Palace (30-1) and the Chad Brown trained Rockemperor making his U.S. debut.

Brown also sends out Standard Deviation), Demarchelier and Digital Age.

We have a couple of familiar faces from the Triple Crown, Master Fencer having run seventh in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and fifth in the Belmont Stakes (G1) and Spinoff, who was 18th in the Derby and sixth in the Belmont.

The co-feature is for three-year-old fillies, a field of nine going in the Belmont Oaks Invitational (G1).

Brown again will be well represented, saddling Newspaperofrecord, Café Americano and Cambier Parc.

The supporting features are the $300,000 John A. Nerud (G2), $700,000 Suburban (G2) and the $250,000 Dwyer (G3).

Catholic Boy is the 9-5 morning line favorite in the Suburban. Last year’s Travers (G1) winner returns to dirt after winning the Dixie (G2) on turf at Pimlico in his last outing.

The Nerud is a Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” race. The winner earns a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1).

NBC has the action today, the two-hour telecast getting underway at 4:00 ET.

Here is the opening race from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Clm $25,000N2L (1:00 ET)
#5 Bid You Adieu 6-1
#7 Canarsie Princess 15-1
#1 Eight Oaks 7-5
#2 Malibu Mischief 3-1

Analysis: Bid You Adieu
makes her second start off the bench here for the capable Kantarmaci barn. Last out the filly stalked the early pace and weakened in the stretch to finish fourth. She broke her maiden two back last summer at the Spa going 5 1/2 on the main track in a race washed off the turf. She should move forward off her last outing and the 6-1 morning line looks fair enough.

Canarsie Princess graduated in the slop in her debut back in March and was badly outrun in her first two starts against winners. She was a well beaten ninth in a NY Stallion Series race in the slop and did not take to turf last out against state bred Alw-1 foes. If the rains do not come this would be her first trip over a fast main track. The blinkers go on for the Miceli barn that has been quite live. She has as much upside as any in here and is going to be a generous price.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 7 The Belmont Oaks Inv. G1 (4:30 ET)
#4 Concrete Rose 3-1
#5 Cafe Americano 12-1
#2 Newspaperofrecord 5-2
#9 Cambier Parc 4-1

Analysis: Concrete Rose
stalked the early pace and drew off smartly to win the Edgewood (G3) last out, beating Newspaperofrecord by 3 3/4 lengths over good ground. The filly earned a career top speed fig and she has now won four of her five career starts. She has worked sharply since her last outing and She should have no p[problem handling 1 1/4 miles. She is by Twirling Candy out of a Powerscourt mare, that sire won the 1 1/4-mile Arlington Million (G1). She is up against it attempting to be a pair of O'Brien runners and a trio of Chad Brown trainees.

Cafe Americano is one of those Brown runners and likely the biggest price among them. She is perfect in two starts, beating Alw-1 optional claimers last out here over good ground at today's distance. Her speed figs are coming up on the light side, but it looks as if she still has plenty of upside. She is by Medaglia d'Oro out of the stakes winner Roxy Gap ($952,790). Castellano gets the call as Irad sticks with Newspaperofrecord.

Newspaperofrecord has come up short in her two starts this year after winning her three starts last year for fun including taking the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) by 6 3/4 lengths. She likely is going to be taken back by Irad here as being on the lead did not pan out in her last pair. The distance is a question mark but tough to toss her completely as Brown sees fit to run her right back here at this distance. her price may end up going up from her 5-2 morning line after her two losses.

#7 Eons 5-1
#2 Empire of War 3-1
#8 Solidify 4-1

Analysis: Award Winner
is coming off a sharp win versus Alw-1 foes and steps into stakes company for the first time here. Two back at Keeneland this guy was a game second behind Demarchelier, who returned to win the Pennine Ridge (G3) in his next outing and goes in today's Belmont Derby (G1). The Lynch trainee is bred to be a good one, out of the stakes winner Devine Actress ($107,300) who has dropped four other winners and two are stakes winners, Oscar Performance ($2.3 million) and Oscar Nominated ($1.5 million).

Eons has won three in a row, taking the Stanton over the turf here last out at 1 11/6 miles. She looks as if the extra ground here will not pose a problem. She is out of the stakes winner Golden Antigua ($309,260) who has dropped two other stakes winners, top earner Giant Gizmo ($508,685). He does not need to move forward much off his last few outings to be right in the mix here.
