At the Gate – Sunday

The Woodward (G1) on Saturday did not pan out well for us as my top pick Yoshida mounted a late run but had to settle for third behind an impressive winner in Preservationist for the Jimmy Jerkens barn.

In the Glens Falls (G2) my top pick Santa Monica also rallied to finish third as my third pick Mrs. Sippi pulled off the upset, returning $14.60.

We did knock down the winner with our top pick in the Saranac (G3) with Global Access returning $10.00 and topping a $2 recommended exacta that paid $20.00.

At Del Mar I whiffed on the first two races, but we nailed both of the stakes. Vasilka made a good late rally to just get up at the wire to win the John C. Mabee (G2) as my top pick over my second choice Juliet Foxtrot, the $2 exacta paying $14.80 and we nailed the trifecta straight but it came back at just $21.60 for a $1.

In the Del Mar Debutante (G1) Bast got the job done as my top pick, paying $7.60. My second choice Inspiressa completed a $2 exacta that paid $19.20 and we also had the trifecta that paid $92.40.

The feature at Saratoga on Sunday is the $350,000 Spinaway (G1) for two-year-old fillies that drew a field of seven. As you can see below, I landed on the chalk.

Don’t forget we have racing on Labor Day as it is the closing day of the Saratoga meeting.

Here is the opening race from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:

SAR Race 1 Md Sp Wt (12:30 ET)
#8 Summer Sangria 5-2
#3 Big Royal Lineage 8-1
#2 Montana Man 8-1
#9 Las Ramblas 8-1

Analysis: Summer Sangria showed good early speed in her debut, setting the early fractions and heading for home with a clear lead but got run down, settling for the runner up spot. She takes the boys again here and looks capable of clearing again early. The Ward barn is 26% winners with second out maidens. The barn is having a subpar meeting, hitting at just a 14% clip and is just 2 for 18 overall with juvies. However, this gal looks capable of wiring this group. She is the first foal to race out of Into Mischief mare.

Big Royal Lineage stalked the early pace and weakened to finish sixth last out on the main track at 8-1 and now tires grass. The RRod trainee is by Bodemeister out of a Medaglia d'Oro mare, her first foal tor ace. The RRod barn is 15% winners with second out maidens. He has a decent enough turf pedigree and should move forward with a race under his belt.

Wagering

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 11 The Spinaway G1 (5:50 ET)
#2 Frank's Rockette 8-5
#3 Perfect Alibi 7-2
#7 Shippy 9-2
#5 Figure of Speech 4-1

Analysis: Frank's Rockette was the beaten chalk last out in the Adirondack (G2) here in her first start against winners after a very impressive maiden score in her debut. Last out she tracked the early pace, came off the inside turning for home and got bumped and pinched back and battle don gamely to come up just a half-length short to Perfect Alibi. With a cleaner trip she should be able to turn the tables and the extra half furlong here should suit her. She is by Into Mischief out of the stakes winner Rocket Twentyone ($136,149).

Perfect Alibi was a smart looking maiden winner in her debut and then was a game second in the Astoria as the beaten favorite in her first start against winners. She improved more last out tracking the early pace and besting our top pick in the stretch in the in the Adirondack at just under 7-1. The filly has come back with a good breeze and is a logical threat here and may end up a bit lighter than her 7-2 morning line. She is out of the stakes winner No Use Denying ($219,016).
