At the Gate – Wednesday

As the fields for the Breeders’ Cup start taking shape there is one defending champ that will not make the trip across the pond.

The great mare Enable, winner of last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) will not defend her title. She was run down in the Arc de Triomphe (G1) in her last outing at Longchamp and is now down for the year.

She will return for a 2020 campaign, so it is possible we could see her in the U.S. next fall after a fourth try in the Arc if all goes well.

"Her racing programme will be determined entirely by her wellbeing, so no racing plans will be announced at this stage. The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe remains an important target," racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe told the Racing Post.

That will like make Bricks and Mortar the favorite for the Turf. The Chad Brown trainee won the Arlington Million (G1) in his last outing.

However, Brown has also mentioned the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1). The five-year-old has not run 1 ½ miles and seems to do his best running at 1 ¼ miles. So, Brown has a tough choice whether to go a mile or 1 ½ miles and he seems to be leaning toward the Classic.

With Enable out of the picture that decision may have just become a bit easier.

Here is the opening race from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Md $20,000 (1:15 ET)
#8 Flattering Eyes 8-1
#7 Cairo Queen 4-5
#1 Fusi 2-1
#3 Beans N Rice 15-1

Analysis: Flattering Eyes was a distant third last out at Finger Lakes and drops back in for a tag. Her best effort came three back where she pressed the early pace and held on to the runner up spot behind repeat winner Alvernia over the main track here. She makes her third start of her current form cycle and catches a really weak group here. She is bred to handle a wet track if the rains come early. She is out of a stakes placed Midas Eyes mare her first foal to race.

Cairo Queen tracked the early pace and faded to finish 10th last out against $40,000 foes on turf at the Spa. She ran second at the Big A going a mile on the main track behind a 10 3/4 length winner. The McLaughlin trainee earned decent figs two and three back despite not being a real threat. These numbers fit well here for the McLaughlin barn but can't get too excited about her 4-5 morning line. She is out of a Yankee Victor mare that has dropped five other foals to race, all winners.

Wagering
WIN: #8 to win at 5-1 or better.
EX: 7,8 / 1,3,7,8
TRI: 7,8 / 1,3,7,8 / 1,2,3,7,8

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:
BEL Race 6 Alw $35,000s (4:05 ET)
#3 Queen Nekia 3-1
#7 Daria's Angel 4-1
#5 Honor Way 2-1
#6 Breaking Bread 7-2

Analysis: Queen Nekia dueled for the early lead, grabbed the lead heading for home and could not match strides with the winner in a runner up finish in a state bred stake at Delaware Park. She beat $50,000 optional claimers two back at a mile for back to back wins. The filly owns a solid pace profile throughout and ships in for a sharp barn in Pecoraro who has hit at a 28% clip on the year. A decent enough off track pedigree if the rains come.

Daria's Angel stalked the early pace and made a mild late rally to finish third last out against $25,000 starter allowance foes off a 3 1/2-month break. Her last win came in the Sis City, a starter stake at the Big A back in March at a mile. The extra furlong should suit her, and she is bred to handle a wet track.
