At the Gate – Wednesday

We enter the final week of the Belmont Park meeting this afternoon which concludes on Sunday, then we will be back in action for Aqueduct which opens next Friday.

Oh, we also have the Breeders’ Cup which gets underway next Friday as well.

With five days left of the Belmont Park meeting trainer Chand Brown has locked up the training title. After an outstanding Saratoga meeting the barn did not slow down, winning 27 races from 97 starters, a 27%-win clip and earnings of over $2.5 million.

The crazy stat of the meeting so far is trainer Gary Contessa, who comes into this afternoon sporting a 0 for 56 mark. Yes, he just might get off the duck this today as I like Bustin Scones in the sixth race.

Manny Franco is leading all jockeys with 42 winners. Next in line is Jose Lezcano, who is having a solid meeting with 36 winners. Joel Rosario is third in the jockey standings with 25.

The Ortiz brothers spent time on suspensions and then at Keeneland. Irad has 17 winners while Jose has 16.

The pre-entries for the Breeders’ Cup come out this evening, so the work starts late tonight and for the next week. I should have my Breeders’ Cup Reports done by Oct. 31.

Now is the perfect time to purchase my Monthly Package. It gives you a month of Belmont Park Reports daily my Best Plays Report each Saturday and Sunday and my two-day Breeders’ Cup Report.

Here is the opening race from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Clm $14,000N3L (1:15 ET)
#4 First Forever 5-2
#5 Movie Score 2-1
#2 Evan's Nice Now 6-1
#3 Citizen Matzo 5-2

Analysis: First Forever set the early fractions and weakened to finish sixth last out against $25,000 state breds in the slop. The winner came back to beat $32,000 foes and the third-place finisher came back to defeat $25,000 company. She makes her second start off the claim by the Englehart barn and looks well spotted here in for a $14,000 tag and facing non-winners of three.

Movie Score prompted the early pace from the outside and battled on gamely to win by a neck over $16,000 non-winners of two at a mile. She was claimed out of the race by the Atras barn that is 26% winners first off the claim. She has enough tactical speed to handle the cut back to six furlongs. The barn is 17% winners moving runners from route to sprint.

Wagering
WIN: #4 to win at 2-1 or better.
EX: 4,5 / 2,3,4,5
TRI: 4,5 / 2,3,4,5 / 2,3,4,5,7

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 7 Alw $77,000N1X (4:40 ET)
#2 Everyonelovesjames 5-1
#8 Gauguin 10-1
#1 Spirit Animal / 1a Financial System 2-1
#6 Mr. Alec 7-2

Analysis: Everyonelovesjames tracked the early pace while wide and did not have any punch left late in a fifth-place finish at this level last out going seven furlongs. The gelding past his first two state bred conditions going a route of ground and two back was only beaten 1 3/4 lengths in the state bed West Point in a fourth-place finish. He was the beaten favorite last out and now it looks as if he is going to be a fair price. Saez is back on board and ride him when he beat state bred Alw-1 foes by 6 1/4 lengths in gate to wire fashion back in June here. He looks capable of moving forward off his last effort and draws the rail in a race without a ton of early speed signed up.

Gauguin has had a ton of tries to beat winners since breaking his maiden in Germany in '16. He comes off the bench here for the Mott barn that is 15% winners with runners coming back off a +180-day layoff. While he has come up short at this level nine times since landing in the U.S., he has landed din the money in six of those trips. Johnny V. takes the call and this guy is going to be a decent price in this spot while not catching an imposing group here.
