Horse Races Today: Sunday’s Gulfstream Park and OP Analysis & Odds

Horse Racing Action at TVG!
So, who wants to be a millionaire?

We have a mandatory payout of the Gulfstream Park jackpot 6 on Sunday. There is currently a carryover of $1,366,159.50 and with the forced payout the pool figures to grow to at least $5 or $6 million. The six-race sequence starts with the sixth race.

If you are a regular reader here, you know I am an outspoken critic of these gimmick jackpot wagers. The Gulfstream Park version is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70% of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30% is carried over to the jackpot pool.

That makes the effective takeout of the wager high, but when there is a forced payout, it goes from being the worst wager in racing to perhaps one of the best.

There is a .20 increment on the wager, so even horseplayers with smaller bankrolls can participate. Today’s sequence is really tough and is going to take a good investment and good ticket strategy to hit it.

If you have a smaller bankroll it might be wise to call a few friends and pool your money together.

There are no free squares in the six-race sequence. I will likely lean heavily on Bareeqa in the opening leg of the sequence. Brookes All Mine could get the job done as the favorite in the second leg, but the final four legs are really a challenge.

Here is the opening race from Gulfstream Park to get the day off to a good start:

GP Race 1 Md $25,000 (12:55 ET)
#12 Books   10-1
#6 Myfirstexwife   9-2
#3 Camellia Gal   2-1
#5 Dinner At Five   6-1

Analysis: Books drops in for a tag and tries turf here after weakening to finish sixth last out on the main track against maiden special weight t company. The Fawkes barn has good numbers with second out maidens, hitting at a 24% clip (with a +ROI). This gal is by Goldencents out of an Unbridled's Song mare that ash dropped two other foals to race and they have both won on turf. She figures to move forward with a race under her belt and she is going to be a generous price in this spot.

Myfirstexwife makes her seventh career start here and is coming off back to back runner up finishes on the grass here at five furlongs. Last out she stalked the early pace and was no match for the winner while the third-place finisher Royal Jewel came back to graduate in her next start for a $25,000 tag. Two back the Abreu trainee was second behind repeat winner Roman City, who beat $25,000 starter optional claimers in her next outing on March 4. She is out of a Grand Slam mare that has dropped three other foals to race with a pair of turf winners.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Gulfstream Park:

GP Race 8 OClm $75,000N1X (4:25 ET)
#1 Kid Mercury   10-1
#5 No Word   3-1
#2 Letmeno   9-2
#4 Mystic Lancelot   7-2

Analysis: Kid Mercury makes his second start off a five-month layoff for the Motion barn. Last out off the bench the gelding stalked the early pace and weakened to finish sixth. The gelding broke his maiden at Kentucky Downs in his second career start and Motion elected to step him right up into stakes company where he was ninth in the Bourbon (G3). He hit the bench after a fourth in the slop in a race taken off the turf. The $475,000 Ocala purchase has a solid turf pedigree, by Lemon Drop Kid out of a stakes placed Unbridled's Song mare, her first foal tor ace. Looking for more from this guy second off the shelf and the price will be right.

No Word broke his maiden in his debut on turf at the Spa last August and then made a mild late bid to finish fifth in the Pilgrim (G3) in his first start against wins. The winner of that race was Structor, who came back to win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) at Santa Anita in his next outing. Pletcher is 30% winners (with a +ROI) with runners coming back off a +180-day layoff. He should be fit and ready to go off works at Palm Beach Downs.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Oaklawn Park:

OP Race 7 Alw $30,000s (4:06 CT)
#2 Adhhar   7-2
#1 Dack Janiel's   3-1
#4 Wicked Indeed   5-1
#10 Oro de Tejano   9-2

Analysis: Adhhar adds blinkers here after the gelding came with a mild late run to finish fourth in the slop in his first start against winners. He graduated two back for a $50,000 tag going six furlongs here. He makes his second start here off the claim by Amoss and his second trip going two turns. He has a strong off track pedigree, by Daaher out of a Tapit mare. It looks as if he is going to get enough pace in front of him here in this spot.

Dack Janiel's tracked the early pace while saving ground and finished evenly in a fourth-place finish last out, losing out on the third spot by just a nose. He graduated three back at Fair Grounds in a  race taken off the turf and Sisterson tried him in stakes company in the Jeff Ruby (G3) on poly in his first start against winners where he was not a threat in an eighth place finish. He fits well here taking on starter allowance foes. He was fourth in the slop in his debut and is bred to handle the off going if we get it. He looks well spotted here.

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.
