Horse Races Today: Sunday’s Belmont Park and Churchill Downs Analysis & Odds

The 2020 Triple Crown kicked off on Saturday and the 4-5 chalk Tiz the Law did not disappoint, drawing off to an impressive 3 ¾ length victory under jockey Manny Franco.

The colt matched his career top Beyer Speed Figure of 100 and now has to wait 11 weeks until the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. It’s possible the colt could be back in action sooner, perhaps a start in the Travers (G1) at Saratoga on Aug. 8?

I’m not a big fan of backing chalk so I took a stab with Pneumatic at 18-1, who turned for home in third but weakened to finish fourth. My second choice Dr Post made a good late run to finish in the runner up spot, the $2 exacta returning $19.60.

I was expecting to see a huge handle, but the NYRA gave us three fields of five and a field of six among the 12 races on the card along with a 4-5 shot in the big race. The all-sources handle of $67,753,336 was considerably lighter than last year’s total of $102,163,280.

Granted there were fans in the stands last year, but with no sports going on I thought the handle would be much higher. However, it was tough to wager on almost half of the races on the card.

We are back in action at Belmont Park with a nine race card today and we will head off to Churchill Downs where we will have to watch the weather as it appears likely we are going to get some rain.

Belmont Park Race 1 Analysis - 6/21 (1:15 p.m. ET)

BEL Race 1 Clm $40,000N2L (1:15 ET)
#2 Quasar   6-1
#5 Doll   5-2
#4 Temperance   9-2
#1 Shannon's Girl   4-1

Analysis: Quasar drops in for a tag after checking in fifth last out against Alw-1 foes on the main track at Aqueduct at 6 1/2 furlongs. he graduated two back in his 10th career outing. He has just two trips on turf, a fifth in a 13-horse field at Yarmouth and a seventh at the Spa last summer. He faces an easier group here and has a decent enough turf pedigree. He gets in light with the bug for the Ribaudo barn that is 23% winners (with a +ROI) with runners coming back off a 61-180-day layoff.

Doll set the early fractions and was no match for a nine-length winner as the beaten favorite last out on dirt. She goes from the indicted Servis to Cox who is 25% winners with newcomers to the barn. Her lone trip on turf was last July where she set the early fractions before weakening to finish fifth. She is out of the stakes winner Dootsie ($117,142) who has dropped seven other winners including a couple of turf winners. Cox has been hot at the meeting and will be interesting to see how this former Servis trainee runs.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Churchill Downs:

Churchill Downs Race 5 Analysis - 6/21 (3:10 p.m. ET)

CD Race 5 Md $20,000 (3:10 ET)
#10 Annie'sgoldengirl   4-1
#9 Money Well Spent   3-1
#1 Tetrahydro   4-1
#7 Lizzie B   8-1

Analysis: Annie'sgoldengirl took action in her debut, sent off as the 5-2 favorite in a field of 12 here on May 31. her filly dueled for the early lead and faded to finish a well beaten 11th. The racing strip was playing to outside stalkers and closers that day. Willing to give her another shot here. The barn is 17% winners with second out maidens. It is not a real tough spot and she has a decent enough off track pedigree, by Goldencents out of a Colonel John mare, her first foal to race.

Money Well Spent was fourth in her debut for a $50,000 tag and then dropped in for $30,000 last out where she checked in fifth. Maker now drops her another notch here for $20,000. She showed some early zip in here debut and there is not much early speed signed up to go here. If she is sent she may be able to shake loose early. She is out of a stakes placed Storm and a Half mare that has dropped five other foals to race with four winners.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

Belmont Park Race 8 Analysis - 6/21 (5:05 p.m. ET)

BEL Race 8 The Lady Shipman (5:05 ET)
#3 Call On Mischief   10-1
#4 Chili Petin   4-1
#11 Miss J McKay   5-2
#1 Bredenbury   6-1

Analysis: Call On Mischief should be a decent price in this spot. The filly is back on turf after promoting the early pace while down in the three path, took over the lead and then was nailed at the wire to miss by a head in a tough beat against non-conditioned allowance foes. She was nearly six lengths clear of the rest of the field and while she was toward the inside much of the trip the outer paths seemed better that day. She was a sharp looking winner two back on turf at 5 1/2 furlongs at Far Grounds to beat Alw-1 foes and she was only beaten nose last December at the same level in her turf debut. She is in good hands with Stidham and the 10-1 morning line looks more than fair. The barn is 19% winners moving runners from dirt to turf.

Chill Petin came off the bench to take the field gate to wire to beat Alw-1 optional claimers at Turfway on poly. She broke her maiden in her debut last April and Ward thought enough of her to send her to Royal Ascot where she was 12th at 22-1 in the Albany Stakes (G3). It is back on turf here returning off a 3 1/2-month break. The 4-1 looks fair and she has been working sharply at Keeneland since her last outing.

Live Longshots:

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.
