Sunday’s Picks from Aqueduct and Gulfstream Park

We close out the week with a little rain in the forecast at Aqueduct and we will head down to Florida where there is a good betting card at Gulfstream Park.

The feature at the Big A is the $100,000 La Verdad, which is named after a speedy filly who won 16 of her 25 career starts with earnings of $1,563,200.

She was trained by Linda Rice who sends out Prairie Fire (8-1), who beat first level allowance company in her last outing on Dec. 5.

The 4-5 morning line favorite is Sharp Starr who returns to the state bred ranks after winning the Go for Wand Handicap (G3) in her last outing on Dec. 5. That win came in the slop and she may catch a wet track again this afternoon.

I was hoping to come up with a filly or mare to beat her but her five foes look overmatched and we will have to settle for a puny price.

AQUEDUCT RACE 1 ANALYSIS (12:20 P.M. ET)

Race 1 Md $25,000

  • #3 Rosey's Peach 7-2
  • #1 Amity Island 8-5
  • #2 Barefoot Dancer 6-1
  • #6 Maria's Gift 4-1

Analysis: Rosey's Peach pressed the early pace, took over the lead and then weakened in the stretch to finish fourth last out going a mile here. She now returns with lasix and blinkers added and a drop in for $25,000. Kendrick sticks and this gal catches a field without much early speed signed up. She has a decent off track pedigree and she may be tough to catch if able to shake loose early. She is out of the stakes winner Peach Flambe ($430,832) who has dropped five winners, top earner stakes winner Berning Rose (2 for 3, $223,800). She fits well here and the 7-2 morning line looks fair.

Amity Island made a good late rally to finish in the runner up spot last out in her second career start. She debuted on turf going six furlongs where she was outrun in an eighth-place finish. She returns with lasix added for the Brown barn. She is out of a stakes placed A.P. Jet mare that has dropped three winners, including stakes winner Fierce Lady ($241,680) and stakes placed Bluegrass Jamboree ($335,335).

GULFSTREAM PARK RACE 6 ANALYSIS (2:40 P.M. ET)

Race 6 Md Sp Wt

  • #7 Platinum Frolic 8-1
  • #2 Search Results 7-2
  • #9 Frankly My Dear 8-1
  • #8 Baffle 'Em 4-1

Analysis: Platinum Frolic adds lasix her for her third career start here for the Fawkes barn. The filly caught a sloppy track at GP West in her debut where she made a mild late bid to finish third. She moved forward last out by run into a 7 1/4 length winner in a runner up finish, better than three lengths clear of the rest of the field. Paco sticks and this gal owns solid early and mid pace numbers. She is out of the stakes winner Stormy Frolic ($360,273) who has dropped eight winners including stakes winner Frolic's Revenge ($346,075). Good value if we catch most of her 8-1 morning line.

Search Results debuts for the Brown barn that is 17% winners with first timers. She was a $310,000 Keeneland purchase, by Flatter out of a stakes placed Candy Ride mare that has dropped one foal to race, Blue Steel ($89,203) who won in his second career start. Solid works at Payson for his debut.

AQUEDUCT RACE 8 ANALYSIS (3:50 P.M. ET)

Race 8 The La Verdad

  • #6 Sharp Starr 4-5
  • #5 Mrs. Orb 4-1
  • #4 Prairie Fire 8-1
  • #1 Timely Tradition 6-1

Sharp Starr is going to be a puny price again here but she looks tough in this spot. She ran big two back when cutting back from nine furlongs, beating state bred Alw-1 company by 15 3/4 lengths and earning a career top Beyer that was 25 points higher than her previous high. I was skeptical but she came back with a game win in the Go for Wand (G3) last out, her Beyer just regressing by four points. That outing came in the slop and we may see a wet track again today. She should be able to handle the cut back to seven furlongs and only real knock is the light price.

Mrs. Orb tracked the early pace, took over the lead heading for home and battled on gamely in a runner up finish in the state bred Bay Ridge last out going nine furlongs. This gal has run second in five straight stakes including the Turnback the Alarm 'Cap (G3) two back. Her last trip at seven furlongs came in the state bred Union Avenue last August at the Spa and she was beaten just a neck. She has a solid off track pedigree and a win and a third in four trips on wet tracks in her career.
