Utah Jazz Team Overview

In one of the most unlikely relocation stories in NBA history, the New Orleans Jazz moved to Salt Lake City in 1979. The expansion franchise only spent five seasons in Louisiana before setting up shop in Utah.

The Jazz were an afterthought in the league until their first playoff appearance in 1984. Behind Adrian Dantley, Utah made it all the way to the Western Conference semifinals round. From that point on, the Jazz turned into a perennial playoff team.

The star power connected with this franchise is impressive to say the least. The most famous front man over the years has been Karl Malone. Known as The Mailman, he played for Utah from 1985 all the way through the 2002/2003 season.

Unfortunately, Malone became known as one of the greatest NBA players to have never won a league championship. He played the final season of his career in Los Angeles and was part of a Lakers’ team that lost to Detroit in the 2004 NBA Finals.

The Jazz came close to winning a world title with back-to-back trips to the championship series in 1997 and 1998. With Jerry Sloan as head coach, Utah came up short against the Chicago Bulls twice, losing each series four games to two.

Other standouts in Jazz team history include John Stockton, who played most of his NBA career alongside Malone.

As a member of the NBA’s Northwest Division, natural rivalries have developed against other division foes. The most heated contests take place against the Denver Nuggets and the Portland Trail Blazers. The Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves also reside in the Northwest.
