Jets vs Browns Prediction, Picks & Betting Odds for Thursday Night Football Week 17

Prior to the start of the season, nobody could have predicted that retired QB Joe Flacco would be squaring off against his former team in primetime with a playoff spot on the line in Week 17 for the Browns. However, here we are – and quite frankly, the 38-year-old veteran is playing his best football since 2017.

Following his departure from Baltimore, Flacco started eight games for the Broncos and nine games for the Jets – and in those contests, his team yielded a record of 3-14 while he averaged less than 235 passing yards per game to go along with 20 touchdowns to 11 interceptions.

However, after playing a very conservative brand of football for Denver and New York, he’s quickly become a full-blown gunslinger during his brief stint for Cleveland, highlighted by Flacco averaging a career high 327 passing yards on 44 pass attempts per game to go along with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions across the last four weeks for the Browns – and the betting audience seems to be hopping on the bandwagon.

According to VegasInsider’s Patrick Everson, the SuperBook closed the lookahead line for this contest at Browns -5.5 on Sunday morning, but in the aftermath of Cleveland’s impressive 36-22 win over Houston in Week 16, the oddsmakers decided to bump up that number to Browns -6.5 when the market reopened on Sunday night, which has slowly climbed to -7 or -7.5 as of Wednesday afternoon depending on the book.

However, as fun as it has been to see Flacco spring off his couch three quarters of the way through the season and immediately start slinging the ball around 45 times per game, the Browns’ relatively careless style of play during their latest stretch makes me trepidatious about laying seven points with Cleveland in this spot.

The Browns are 3-1 in four games with Flacco under center, which includes a 17-point loss to the Rams and a thrilling three-point win over the Bears. So make no mistake about it, Cleveland is far from invincible, especially after turning the ball over nine times in the last four weeks.

In theory, Cleveland’s elite defensive unit should be able to completely shut down the Jets’ 30th-ranked offense. However, as a result of their latest turnover struggles as well as their heavy reliance on a wobbly passing attack, the Browns’ opponents have scored an average of 25.5 PPG in their four games with Flacco at QB – with a floor of 17 and a ceiling of 36.

But on the flip side, the Browns have still managed to keep the boat afloat in thrilling fashion by generating 26.5 PPG on the offensive side of the ball with Flacco at the helm, and they enter this matchup having scored 31-plus points in two of their last three games. I like the over on Thursday night.

New York Jets Betting Analysis

QB Trevor Siemian made his first start of the season for the Jets last week, and it was a little bit of a mixed bag as he completed 55% of his 49 pass attempts for just 217 yards to go along with one touchdown and one interception in a 30-28 win over Washington.

Siemian will make his second start of the year on Thursday night, and while last week’s performance against Washington didn’t exactly give me newfound confidence in the Jets’ offense, they did score 30 points for just the third time all season  – and Robert Saleh let him sling it 49 times in his first start. So if you are expecting a conservative, run-heavy game script from a Jets offense down to its fourth QB, you may want to reconsider.

Cleveland Browns Rams Betting Analysis

Cleveland has been hampered by injuries all season, and while many other teams would have quickly folded in their current situation (like the Jets), this team simply won’t quit and they should be applauded for that. Similarly to New York, the Browns also find themselves down to their fourth QB, yet they have continued to play playoff caliber football, currently boasting a record of 10-5 with wins in six of their last eight games entering this week.

That said, I think we should probably temper our expectations for the future of Joe Flacco and the current iteration of this Browns team.
