Rams vs. Panthers Prediction

LA @ CAR Odds

I will look for every possible way to fade the team that lost their way into the playoffs. The Panthers stumbled into an NFC South title and are rewarded with having to face the Los Angeles Rams in the Wild Card round.

The Rams are the 2nd-most-efficient offense in the NFL, totaling .149 EPA/play. They are equally as effective in the air and on the ground, ranking 3rd in dropback EPA and 4th in rush EPA. The Panthers rank 26th in EPA/play on offense. There is a clear advantage for the Rams.

The talent disparity continues to grow when you look at the defenses. The Rams rank 7th in EPA/play allowed, whereas the Panthers rank 23rd.

In the Action Network's luck rankings, the Rams come in as the unluckiest team in the playoffs (at 27th), while the Panthers rank 12th. Yet again, another advantage for the Rams.

The Panthers may have taken the regular-season matchup, but the Rams get their revenge (and then some) in the playoffs.

Prediction: Los Angeles Rams -9.5 (-112)

Packers vs. Bears Prediction

GB @ CHI Odds

The Chicago Bears remain one of the luckiest teams in the NFL, ranking 2nd in Action Network's luck rankings. The Packers are one of the unluckiest teams, coming in at 22nd. This indicates that some positive regression is due for the Packers, while negative regression is due for the Bears.

In addition to this, the Packers have the benefit of rest, while the Bears do not. The Bears did not rest their starters in their loss to the Lions, while the Packers rested their starters in Week 18. This presents another advantage for the Packers.

The Packers also have better offensive EPA numbers in the pass game and overall, and the defensive matchup is comparable. The Packers take this NFC North matchup as the #7 seed.

Prediction: Green Bay Packers Moneyline (-105)

Bills vs. Jaguars Prediction

BUF @ JAC Odds

The Buffalo Bills have one of the worst rush defenses in the NFL, ranking 31st in rush EPA allowed. Travis Etienne is poised to take advantage of this mismatch, setting up Trevor Lawrence and the passing game.

The Bills offense has been strong this season, but their strength of schedule comes in at 29th, indicating that this success could be a product of their schedule. Jacksonville ranks 5th in EPA allowed on defense, with a particular strength against the pass.

The AFC South champions take this one and move on to the Divisional Round.

Prediction: Jacksonville Jaguars Moneyline (+100)

49ers vs. Eagles Prediction

SF @ PHI Odds

Both of these teams play very slow. The 49ers average 67 offensive snaps per game, and the Eagles average 63.7 offensive snaps per game. Both of these teams' defenses are also strong in high-leverage situations. Both teams have allowed touchdowns on around 53% of red-zone trips, and they both have allowed under 2.2 points per drive, placing them in the top half of the NFL for both of those statistics.

Both of these teams are at the top of Action Network's luck rankings, indicating that scoring regression may be inbound for both of these teams. This should be a low-scoring NFC affair.

Prediction: San Francisco 49ers @ Philadelphia Eagles u45 (-105)

Chargers vs. Patriots Prediction

LAC @ NE Odds

The New England Patriots have had a hilariously easy schedule this season, where the Chargers have had the 16th ranked schedule. The Chargers also have the benefit of a well-rested team, while the Patriots played their starters in their week 18 matchup against the Dolphins.

The Chargers' defense has a leg up in this matchup. They rank 6th in EPA/play allowed, 7th in dropback EPA allowed, and 4th in rush EPA allowed. This Los Angeles defense will be able to get stops, and I trust their offense to move the ball with their starters being the beneficiaries of a psuedo bye-week.

Prediction: Los Angeles Chargers +3.5 (-109) + Los Angeles Chargers (+170)
