2020 NFL Draft to swing on Tua pick

Oddsmakers set NFL Draft Betting Odds for Alabama Crimson Tide star QB Tua Tagovailoa

This NFL Draft’s x-factor is Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa

The Crimson Tide star who won a national championship as a true freshman saw his junior season end due to a dislocated hip and posterior wall fracture suffered on Nov. 16.

Nearly four months later, Tagovailoa was cleared to start the process of working out in front of NFL teams on March 9 after scans came back clean and his hip was deemed to be progressing nicely. Before the coronavirus pandemic halted all our lives, Tagovailoa had scheduled his pro day for April 9 in Tuscaloosa.

Instead, Tagovailoa threw and went through drills in Nashville on April 9, sending footage to all teams afterward in an effort to prove he's back at 100 percent.

Considering all the assets the Miami Dolphins hold and their desire for a franchise quarterback, moving up to No. 2 is something they could execute if they feel Washington is willing to move down and pass on top pass rusher Chase Young from Ohio State.

The L.A. Chargers have the No. 6 pick and a need for a new signal caller, having moved on from Philip Rivers. Washington’s No. 2 pick could very well wind up being the Tua Sweepstakes, but even that is up in the air since interested parties will have to logistically figure out how to get to Tagovailoa to have their medical personnel give their ‘OK’ and get their own look at the player that might have been the top selection ahead of LSU's Joe Burrow if he hadn’t suffered through an injury-plagued junior season.

The Redskins made major changes after a disappointing 3-13 season, letting go of long-time team president Bruce Allen and promoting Kyle Smith to vice president of player personnel, essentially placing him in the general manager role.

Ron Rivera replaced Jay Gruden as head coach and may ultimately want Young to anchor his defense, but Washington is expected to listen to all offers and might be interested in Tagovailoa themselves since Dwayne Haskins had a shaky rookie season.

The Lions pick third and may be looking for a franchise quarterback to groom since Matthew Stafford missed the last half of the 2019 season with a spinal injury. The Giants are no threat to take a quarterback at No. 4 since they’re pleased with last year’s first-round pick, Daniel Jones, but the Dolphins could fear Detroit enough to move ahead of them and have plenty of ammunition to move up from No. 5.

NFL Draft Betting Odds and Picks

NFL Draft Odds - Tua Tagovailoa

Tagovailoa Draft Position: Over 5.5 -102, Under 5.5 -126

Tagovailoa Going No. 1 +2000 (Bet $100 to win $2000)

Tagovailoa Going No. 2 +1400 (Bet $100 to win $1400)

Tagovailoa Going No. 3 +360 (Bet $110 to win $360)

It remains to be seen whether media reports are reliable enough to get us all intel on how Tagovailoa fares in individual workouts, but the possibility exists that we won’t get that information. To properly wager on Tagovailoa, who could absolutely be the No. 2 pick if he demonstrates the ability that made him college football’s top prospect entering the 2019 season.

There aren’t many quarterbacks out there that are both mobile and accurate, things Tagovailoa does at an extremely high level. Barring an injury-relate setback, I can’t imagine he’ll be available after the No. 3 pick is made. Young, arguably the best player in the draft, makes it impossible to wager that Tagovailoa will go second since he’s such a great fit for Washington, but Detroit could take the Alabama product or trade down to No. 5 or 6 with Miami, L.A. or someone else, making him a strong choice with the third selection given the value.
