The Golden Knights are coming off a disappointing 5-4 overtime loss against the Vancouver Canucks last time out on Tuesday. Vancouver was leading 3-1, and 4-2 after two periods, but VGK scored with an extra attacked late to force OT. Quinn Hughes ended things just 51 seconds into the extra session, as VGK suffered a costly loss. At least it picked up one point, but they're still on the outside looking in for a playoff spot in the Western Conference, sitting with 85 points with eight games to go. That puts them three points behind the Dallas Stars and Los Angeles Kings, and four points back of the Nashville Predators, but time is ticking down.
The Flames are second in the Western Conference with 99 points, well back of the Colorado Avalanche (112 points), with nine games remaining. If the playoffs started today, the Flames would face the Predators, but it could very easily face the Golden Knights if things break a certain way over the next two weeks. The Flames might welcome that matchup, as they pounded the Golden Knights 6-0 in Calgary on Feb. 9 in the most recent meeting, although VGK won the first matchup 3-2 on The Strip back on Dec. 5.
