LOS ANGELES KINGS vs. EDMONTON OILERS PREDICTIONS

The upstart Kings fired out of the chute with two goals in the first 16:48 in Game 1, quieting the raucous crowd at Rogers Place on Monday night in Game 1. Connor McDavid got the crowd back into it late in the first, and Kailer Yamamoto had an equalizer on the man advantage to make it 2-2. Unfortunately for the Oilers, the Kings just wouldn't go away. Brendan Lemieux and Leon Draisaitl traded goals in the second period, and it was 3-3 heading to the final period.

In the third, Phillip Danault had the game-winning tally at 14:46 of the third from Sean Durzi and Trevor Moore, serving as the unlikely hero in a big upset in the opening game. Now, the Oilers look to at least salvage a split before heading to Southern California for Game 3.

LOS ANGELES KINGS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 45-27-11
  • ATS: 40-43
  • O/U: 43-37-3

The Kings won on the road, and it might appear to be a big surprise, but it shouldn't be. Los Angeles was actually 23-11-7 in 41 regular-season games away from SoCal, while going just 21-16-4 at home. It was a strange season for the Kings, and they actually played much better away from the smog of Los Angeles.

L.A. has now won 15 of the past 22 games on the road, and it snapped a six-game losing skid in the Conference Quarterfinals Round. The good news for the Kings is that they have stacked wins lately, posting a 4-1 record in the past five following a victory. Can they go up 2-0 and really push the Oilers into a position they just do not want to be?

EDMONTON OILERS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 53-23-7
  • ATS: 40-43
  • O/U: 47-33-3

The Oilers were swept by the Winnipeg Jets last season in the first round, and while the team likely remains confident, fans and bettors are likely having some doubt about the viability of this team. Mike Smith misplayed a puck late in Game 1, leading to a sequence which saw Danault bury the game-winning tally. What is it about the Oilers and their inability to succeed in the postseason?

Edmonton has managed just one series in the playoffs since the 2006 season when it lost to the Carolina Hurricanes in the Stanley Cup Finals. Superstar Connor McDavid was nine years old when that series took place, so yeah, it's been a while since the Oil has had a deep run into the postseason. The Oilers are now 0-7 in the past seven postseason games when favored after getting dumped in Game 1, as Edmonton's ship continues to, yes, leak oil in the playoffs.

LOS ANGELES KINGS vs. EDMONTON OILERS CONCLUSION

I am going to trust the Oilers in Game 2. McDavid, Draisaitl and company have to even this series up, don't they? If not, they might be on a very similar path to last season's playoffs, and that's not a good thing. Another disappointing first-round and out could mean some drastic organizational changes, an unhappy duo of superstars and perhaps new postal codes for the aforementioned studs.

But all of that doom and gloom could be washed away with one nice win, as Edmonton looks to make this a series. The Oilers just need to find the solid goaltending they received in the second half of the season which got them back into position after an ugly start. I am not entirely certain Smith or Mikko Koskinen can be dominant and steal a series, but I believe in Game 2, they'll be just good enough to help the home side grab a split before heading to L.A.
