EDMONTON OILERS vs. LOS ANGELES KINGS PREDICTIONS

The Oilers opened up at home with a disappointing 4-3 loss on home ice against the Kings, as Phillip Danault sent the home fans away sad with a game-winning goal with just 5:14 remaining in regulation. Mike Smith made a miraculous save after a misplay prior to the GWG, but he couldn't stop Danault. He rebounded in rather grand fashion for Game 2, turning aside all 30 of the shots he faced.

Leon Draisaitl and Evander Kane scored on the power play, while Darnell Nurse notched a shorthanded goal, with the Oilers scoring three goals in the second period and three goals in the third, en route to a 6-0 whitewashing of the Kings to square the series. Connor McDavid was up to his usual tricks, too, chipping in with a pair of assists, giving him four points (1 G, 3 A) through two games in this series.

The Oilers have looked like the better team for most of the early going of this series, and they'll be looking to seize home-ice advantage back in this Game 3. If Smith can play like he did last time out, it's a good bet they'll do just that.

EDMONTON OILERS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 54-23-7
  • ATS: 41-43
  • O/U: 47-34-3

The Oilers registered the 6-0 win in Game 2, cashing as a rather heavy favorite while also hitting on the puck line. Edmonton is now 20-7 in the past 27 games overall, while going 41-18 in the past 59 as a favorite. The Oilers hit the road where they have been money, going 5-2 in the past seven on the road, and 7-2 in the previous nine as a road favorite.

While those trends make a potential bettor feel all nice, warm and fuzzy inside, the fact the Oilers are 1-7 in the past eight playoff games as a favorite should give you a little pause. However, Edmonton is 5-2 in the past seven in the Quarterfinals Round, which is nice.

The Oilers haven't had a lot of success over the years in Los Angeles, however, going just 5-17 in the past 22 trips to Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center). The home team has cashed in 18 of the previous 25 in this series, too.

LOS ANGELES KINGS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 45-28-11
  • ATS: 40-44
  • O/U: 43-38-3

The Kings obviously would like to have won both games in Edmonton, but they accomplished their goal by grabbing at least a split while wrestling away home-ice advantage from the series favorites. But there is still a lot of work to be done before the Kings are considered the faves in the series.

Los Angeles has won six of the past eight games overall, and they're a solid 4-1 in the past five when receiving a day of rest. However, the Kings are just 7-19 in the past 26 as a home underdog, and 1-4 in the past five playoff games when an underdog. Of course, that one happened in Game 1 as heavy 'dogs. Los Angeles is 1-7 in the past eight Quarterfinals Round games, too, but again, that one was the series opener.

EDMONTON OILERS vs. LOS ANGELES KINGS CONCLUSION

I like what I've seen from the Oilers so far, as they've averaged 4.5 goals per game through the two games. The Kings were solid in Game 1, scratching out a road victory as heavy underdogs, but they completely checked out in Game 2. While Los Angeles has maintained a high level of mastery against Edmonton over the years, particularly on home ice, I expected McDavid, Draisaitl and company to topple Jonathan Quick and the Kings in this series, and in particular, in this game.

This isn't 2010-18 when Quick was one of the best goaltenders in the NHL, ticking off playoff appearances and Stanley Cup Finals runs. He has fallen off in recent seasons, and while he has been a little better this season, he is not going to be a match for McDavid and company. The Oilers are getting some secondary and tertiary help scoring, and I am not sure they're going to lose another game in this series. However, if that is true, Edmonton is going to have to overcome some ugly recent history in SoCal.

Take the Oilers to win a close one in Game 3, and play the OVER lightly.
