Analysis of the Match

Chelsea secured a place in the Champions League by beating Nottingham Forest in their final Premier League match of the season. Enzo Maresca now has the chance to round off a productive first season at Stamford Bridge by winning silverware in the form of the Conference League.

The Blues are the clear favourites ahead of this clash, but Betis have the quality to cause an upset. Manuel Pellegrini’s side has looked lethal going forward in recent months. Since the January window slammed shut, they have netted an average of 1.96 goals per game across 25 matches in all competitions.

Antony has played a key role for Betis since joining on loan from Manchester United. The Brazilian is a hero at the club, and it’s easy to see why.  He has netted four goals and assisted a further three in the Conference League this season. Betis are scoring an average of 0.60 more goals per game since the winger’s arrival.  Abde Ezzalzouli and Isco will also provide plenty of creativity.

Chelsea is capable of dominating the ball, but they have looked vulnerable to the counterattack this season. This is an area where Betis thrives. The Spanish side will need to make the most of their opportunities, particularly in wide areas. Antony and Ezzalzouli will have space to run beyond Maresca’s full-backs, and that could be the difference maker.

The Blues can also have success from set pieces. Pellegrini’s side has struggled to defend crosses in the box of late. This was an area that Fiorentina were able to exploit in the second leg of the semi-final, as Robin Gosens scored two headed goals directly from a corner.

Maresca has the most expensive side in the competition, so it’s no surprise that they have made it to the final and are favourites to lift the trophy. However, they will need to maintain their focus against a Betis side that can be incisive.

Real Betis Analysis and Form

After years of near misses and European frustration, Real Betis are finally one win away from continental glory. The Andalusian club has defied expectations throughout the campaign, reaching their first European final in 117 years. Even after a heavy defeat to Atlético Madrid in La Liga, morale remains high for a squad that has relied on spirit as much as skill.

Under Manuel Pellegrini, the Verdiblancos have combined tactical discipline with attacking invention. Their journey to Wrocław included a gritty semi-final draw away to Fiorentina, which followed a narrow 2–1 win in Seville. They have shown resilience in high-stakes moments, especially when written off, and now have the chance to make club history under a coach well-versed in big European nights.

Statistically, Betis are not dominant. They average 53.5 percent possession in the Conference League, placing them just ninth in that category. But that has not prevented progress. In 2022, Roma lifted this very trophy with even less control on the ball. The Spaniards are not trying to dazzle, they are trying to win, and that mentality could be enough in a one-off final.

Nonetheless, Betis had an average of 1.69 goals per game, while only conceding 0.75. Their xG also aligns with what we saw, as it stands at 1.83 xG per game. In this campaign, they’ve scored 27 goals in 16 games total.

Though outmatched on paper, the Seville outfit thrives in the role of underdog. They’ve embraced chaos in this campaign, often winning without dominating, and finding ways to survive when others fold. With Pellegrini’s calm presence on the touchline and a squad full of players eager to seize a once-in-a-lifetime chance, Betis won’t die wondering.

Chelsea Analysis and Form

Chelsea arrive in Wrocław riding a wave of momentum. A fourth-place finish in the Premier League secured Champions League football, removing the pressure of needing a result for qualification. This final is now about legacy. A win would make them the first club to complete the set of UEFA’s five major men’s trophies.

This accomplishment would not only solidify Chelsea's status in European football history but also highlight their consistent performance across different European competitions over the years.

Maresca’s side has treated the Conference League as serious business. With 12 wins from 14 games, the Blues boast a near-flawless record. They’ve averaged just under three goals per match and conceded an average of less than one, showing both their firepower and discipline. Their xG and xGA figures also point to efficiency, not just dominance.

The Londoners have scored in every single game of their European campaign. They convert nearly one in five shots and average over 15 attempts per game. That combination of volume and accuracy makes them a constant threat. Even when they aren’t at their sharpest, their clinical edge makes the difference.

Despite this being a relatively new competition, the trophy holds real significance. Maresca, once an assistant to Pellegrini, now faces his mentor on a stage that could define his early managerial career. For him and his players, it’s not just about making history, but proving a point.

Head to Head

This is the third European tie between the two clubs and the third different European competition they’ve played each other in.  Chelsea and Betis squared off in the Champions League in 2005 and in the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1998.

Chelsea holds the best record in head-to-head meetings, with three victories to Betis's single win. Notably, there has never been a draw between the sides. The last encounter occurred during the 2005/06 Champions League group stage, where Betis recorded their first win over Chelsea, a narrow 1-0 home victory courtesy of a goal from Dani.

However, Chelsea were dominant in the return match, beating Betis 4-0 at Stamford Bridge, with goals from Didier Drogba, Ricardo Carvalho, Joe Cole, and Hernan Crespo. This is already Real Betis’ best showing in a European competition. Their previous best was that Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-final tie against Chelsea in 1997/98. The Blues won 5-2 on aggregate.

Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini has faced Chelsea 11 times in his career, securing four wins without conceding. Meanwhile, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca was Pellegrini's first assistant at West Ham United. Together, they held a 37.50% winning record. The Italian also played under Pellegrini at Malaga in 2011/12, featuring 20 times with two goals and one assist.

Team News and Predicted Lineups

Real Betis possible starting lineup:
Adrian; Sabaly, Bartra, Natan, Rodriguez; Cardoso, Fornals ;Antony, Isco, Ezzalzouli; Bakambu.

Chelsea possible starting lineup:
Jorgensen; James, Adarabioyo, Badiashile, Cucurella; Caicedo, Dewsbury-Hall; Madueke, Palmer, Sancho; Jackson.

Chelsea's forward, Nicolas Jackson, is expected to lead the line despite being suspended for the last two Premier League games. The Senegalese striker's return is timely, especially since Christopher Nkunku remains sidelined with a knock.

The Blues will be without Aaron Anselmino, Wesley Fofana, and Omari Kellyman who are all nursing hamstring issues. Mykhaylo Mudryk is suspended and Romeo Lavia remains ineligible for the Conference League. Goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall are poised to start the match.

Real Betis face their own challenges, with Hector Bellerin ruled out for the season due to a hamstring injury suffered against Fiorentina. Marc Roca, Diego Llorente, and Chimy Avila join him on the absentee list. Giovani Lo Celso's participation is uncertain after missing training with muscular discomfort.

Youssouf Sabaly and Johnny Cardoso return to action. Cedric Bakambu, Betis's 34-year-old striker, will lead the line, aiming to add to his seven Conference League goals as he trails only Afimico Pululu in the scoring charts.
