Borussia Dortmund vs Monterrey Predictions, Odds and Pick

Borussia Dortmund will face Monterrey on Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. ET in the Club World Cup Round of 16 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

One of the biggest surprises in the tournament so far has been Monterrey's advancement to the knockout stage at the expense of River Plate.

The Mexican team entered the tournament in inconsistent form but proved their critics wrong with two impressive performances against Inter Milan and Urawa Red Diamonds.

With the best defense alongside PSG and Al-Hilal, Monterrey will need another outstanding display against one of Europe's top-performing teams.

Borussia Dortmund, managed by Nico Kovač, has won 14 out of 23 games and has developed a reputation for scoring multiple goals in matches.

This matchup promises to be entertaining, with the Germans being the clear favorites, according to bookmakers. The odds for the Borussia Dortmund vs. Monterrey match suggest that Dortmund has a 60% chance of winning (-160 on the moneyline) within 90 minutes.

Analysis of the Match

The round of 16 pits two unbeaten teams against each other following the group stages.

Dortmund has improved as the tournament has progressed and will likely be in the ascendancy for significant periods of this clash. Reaching the quarter-finals is a minimum requirement for Niko Kovač's side. However, Monterrey poses a very real threat, particularly on the counter.

The Mexican side showed they are a match for any team by drawing 1-1 with Inter Milan, the Champions League runners-up, in their first game at the Club World Cup. Monterrey kept just 38% possession but was able to muster 11 attempts, looking like a constant threat against the Nerazzurri.

Domènec Torrent has plenty of experience in his squad. The likes of Sergio Ramos and Sergio Canales are accustomed to playing big matches against European opposition. Their know-how will be key as they attempt to disrupt Borussia Dortmund's rhythm.

Niko Kovač's Dortmund is renowned for its aggressive, pressing, and swift transitions. They won't give the Monterrey back-line room to breathe when receiving the ball. Nevertheless, there will be space to exploit behind the BVB defense if Torrent's men can play through the initial press.

Dortmund deserves its favorite tag but will be wary of Monterrey's attacking prowess. Germán Berterame netted a brace in his last game and can certainly make his mark against the Bundesliga giants.

Borussia Dortmund Analysis and Form

It was a disappointing season for Dortmund. They failed to win silverware and were fortunate to qualify for next season's Champions League due to their poor performance in the first half of the campaign under Nuri Sahin. Since then, Niko Kovač has taken the reins, and things are improving.

The Club World Cup presents BVB with an opportunity to redeem itself. They drew their opening game against Fluminense 0-0 but have since beaten both Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan.

The unbeaten start to the tournament means that Dortmund is now enjoying a run of 10 competitive matches without defeat, winning eight. Over that period, they have averaged 2.7 goals per game.

Serhou Guirassy was the standout forward for Dortmund last season. In the past 12 months, he has netted an average of 0.64 non-penalty goals per 90 minutes played.

Guriassy is now supported by Jobe Bellingham, who recently made the switch from Sunderland to follow in his brother's footsteps.

Jobe has performed well at the Club World Cup, assisting a goal in the 1-0 win over Ulsan and scoring in the 4-3 victory against Mamelodi Sundowns. The Englishman looks set to become a fan favorite at BVB, just like his brother Jude.

Kovač will be hoping that his bolstered attack can get the better of Monterrey here.

Monterrey Analysis and Form

Monterrey's preparation for the Club World Cup was far from ideal, so they will be delighted to be in the knockout stages. Martin Demichelis was sacked in May after the team's play-off quarter-final defeat in the Liga MX.

Domènec Torrent has since arrived and set about transforming this talented group of players into a cohesive team with a distinct style of play.

Torrent, who has worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant for over 10 years, favors a possession-based approach in line with the Catalan style.

That was evident as his team dominated the ball on their way to an emphatic 4-0 win over Urawa Red Diamonds in the group stage, but they will find it harder to control possession against Dortmund.

The Rayados also had the lion's share of possession against River Plate in their second group game. However, they registered just three shots in the entire match, which prompted a change of formation for their next game.

Torrent could name two strikers once again as he aims to trouble BVB, but it cannot come at the expense of defensive solidity. They have conceded just one goal at the Club World Cup thus far.

Monterrey will have to deliver a performance of the highest level at both ends of the pitch if they are to upset the odds and eliminate Dortmund.

Head-to-Head Analysis

This round of 16 games is Borussia Dortmund's first official match against a Mexican team. The Bundesliga club has previously featured in international competitions. Dortmund triumphed over Cruzeiro in the 1997 final. In the group stage, they secured wins over Ulsan HD and Mamelodi Sundowns and a draw against Fluminense. BVB remains unbeaten in international competitions.

Monterrey, however, brings more experience against non-CONCACAF opponents, having competed 15 times in the Club World Cup. Despite this, their record against European teams is lacking, with two losses to Chelsea and Liverpool and a draw with Inter Milan on Matchday One.

One man familiar with the opposition club is Monterrey defender Sergio Ramos. The former Real Madrid man faced them 10 times while at the Santiago Bernabeu. In typical Ramos fashion, there is a history of indiscipline.  Ramos has received more yellow cards (5) against BVB than he has against any other non-Spanish club.

Team News and Predicted Lineups

Borussia Dortmund's possible starting lineup:

Kobel; Ryerson, Anton, Bensebaini; Couto, Groß, Nmecha, Svensson; Bellingham, Brandt; Guirassy

Monterrey's possible starting lineup:

Andrada, Chavez, Medina, Ramos, Reyes; Deossa, Ambriz, Torres, Canales; Berterame, Ocampos

Niko Kovač looks set to name an unchanged starting 11 for this round of 16 clash. Nico Schlotterbeck remains sidelined through injury, so Ryerson, Anton, and Bensebaini will likely form Dortmund's back three.

Groß and Nmecha will do a lot of the legwork in midfield. This allows Jobe Bellingham and Julian Brandt to get on the ball in advanced areas and support Serhou Guirassy in the attack. Jobe flourished behind the striker in the wins over Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan. He should continue to have an impact in the knockout stages.

Carlos Salcedo is the only injury absentee for Monterrey. The defender is yet to feature at the Club World Cup and hasn't played since January.

Sergio Ramos is the big name in the Monterrey team. The former Spain defender carries a goal threat. The 39-year-old scored a header from a corner in the 1-1 draw with Inter in the group stages. His team may need his prowess in the air once again.

Torrid, Ambriz, and Deossa have the unenviable task of ensuring that Monterrey doesn't get overrun in the midfield. Up front, Berterame is likely to get the nod after he scored a brace in Monterrey's last game.
