Los Angeles was the site of the 2020 All-Star Game, but a global pandemic nearly shut down the entire MLB season and ultimately cancelled the Midsummer Classic. The MLB decided to bring it back Los Angeles for the 2022 season, and there will be no shortage of Los Angeles based players that will be represented for all the festivities. The Dodgers are sending five players to represent them at Dodger Stadium, including three of their starting pitchers. The Angels will send the two obvious choices, Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani.

The 2022 All-Star break technically began on Saturday July 16th with the All-Star Futures and Celebrity Softball Game. On Monday July 18th, the big leaguers will take center stage with the annual Home Run Derby. The event has been held every year since 1985, except for the 1988 season due to rain and 2020 due to the pandemic.

The bracket format of the last few years will stay the same in Los Angeles. Pete Alonso comes into this year’s Derby winning two straight and as the #2 seed will be facing off against the #7 seed in Ronald Acuna Jr. Alonso might also be worth a look at BetMGM Sportsbook listed at a healthy +190. The #1 seed in Kyle Schwarber who is batting just .211 on the season also has slugged his way to 28 home runs, second behind just Aaron Judge.

Another notable participant in this year’s Home Run Derby is Albert Pujols. At BetMGM Sportsbook Pujols is listed as +2000, which is understandable given his 6 home runs off a .215 batting average. This year’s field consists of eight power hitters, and only Alonso and Juan Soto were in the 2021 tournament.

Last year Soto defeated Ohtani in the first round before falling to the eventual champion in the second round by just 1 home run. Soto might be a good wager coming in off a .247 average coupled with 19 home runs. He is listed as +600 at BetMGM. The matchup in round 1 for Juan Soto will be the Guardians slugger Jose Ramirez.

Jose Ramirez is pretty much the only slugger on a team known for small ball. He comes in with 17 home runs, 5 more than the next closest on the Guardians. Jose Ramirez has been a perennial 23+ home run hitter since 2017 except for the shortened 2020 season where he still mashed 17 in just 58 games played. You can find him at BetMGM for an extremely healthy +1500.

Another exciting matchup is the Corey Seager and Julio Rodriguez matchup. Rodriguez has been on a tear this season, hitting .275 and 16 home runs. Seager was the last man to complete the field and comes in with 22 home runs on the season. Rodriguez is +800 to win while Seager is +900.

The 2022 Home Run Derby has a plethora or newsworthy storylines to follow. The best story would obviously be Pujols doing the unthinkable as a +2,000 underdog. Alonso is vying for 3 in row, and Soto is looking for some closure. Ramirez is in his first Derby after slugging for the last 6 years, and he joins the rookie Rodriquez in his first Home Run Derby.

BetMGM Sportsbook is offering all new players that sign up utilizing the VIBONUS code for a risk free bet up to $1,000. Bet on any of these power slugging bats at a nice plus money price, and if that wager is graded as a loss, BetMGM will refund the wager in terms of a free bet tokens. NO RISK!

Until next time, enjoy the ride.
