The Miami Marlins are having another season to forget as the look to avoid a series sweep at the hand of the New York Mets. Things proceeded to continue to go bad, especially when Sandy Alcantara let up four earned runs on just five innings. Alcantara’s ERA instantly shot up all the way to 1.99 after that start. The Marlins followed that game by being shut out 4-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Mets showed out against cross town rivals in the Subway Series and have kept that momentum in Miami. The Mets have already begun making moves as they gear up for an almost certain playoff appearance. Subway World Series anyone? The Miami Marlins most likely will not buy, but we expect the trade deadline to come and go with not much change.

The Mets have dominated this series in recent seasons. They are 10-4 against the Marlins in their last 14 meetings and 4-1 in their last five meeting in Miami. The Marlins sit 16.5 games back from the Mets for first place in the National League East, and this series could either widen the divide or close it.

The Miami Marlins are +126 on the money line at BetMGM Sportsbook and the New York Mets are slightly favored with a -145 money line. A $100 wager on the underdog Marlins would net a $126 profit. The Marlins will have Pablo Lopez on the bump. Lopez is an ace on any other staff, but most of the time he spends in Sandy Alcantara’s shadow.

Lopez enter the games with a 3.03 ERA through 116 innings of work. He has allowed one earned run or fewer in three of his last four starts, and two or fewer in four of his last five. He has faced the Mets twice this season with mixed results. The first matchup with the Mets saw Lopez give up six earned runs through 5.1 innings, but in his most recent start against he went five strong allowing just one earned run.

The Mets will counter with Taijuan Walker. He carriers a 2.67 season ERA and has allowed one earned run or fewer in five of his last seven starts. Walker has faced the Marlins three times this season and has found a lot of success. In three starts spanning 19.2 innings the Marlins have only been able to put up two earned runs against Walker.

The total is currently set to 7 with both the over and under laying a -110 price. The Mets have gone under the total at a 3-1-1 clip in their last five road games. The Marling have also had trouble putting up runs against righties, as evidenced by a 7-3-2 under record in their last 12 home games.
