Before the games on Aug. 16, the Padres were second in the NL West and in the final Wild Card spot in the NL. Through the opener of this series, the Padres were 3-2 in their last five games. The Marlins blanked the Padres 3-0 in the first game of the set. 

The Marlins are second to last in the NL East, ahead of only the Washington Nationals. Prior to the contest on Aug. 16, the Marlins had a run differential of -44. In their last set, the Marlins were swept at home in four games by the defending World Series champion Atlanta Braves. 

Clevinger has allowed 59 hits, nine home runs, and 21 walks with 65 strikeouts in 70 innings. The Padres are 3-2 in Clevinger’s last five outings. In Clevinger’s last game vs. the Nationals on Aug. 12, he gave up one earned run and three hits in five innings. 

Lopez has given up 111 hits, 15 home runs, and 37 walks along with 129 strikeouts in 129.1 innings. The Marlins are 1-4 in Lopez’s last five appearances. In Lopez’s last outing vs. the Braves on Aug. 12, he allowed two earned runs and four hits in 5.2 innings. 

Prior to the games on Aug. 16, the Padres ranked ninth in RBI (507), 10th in on-base percentage (.318), 17th in batting average (.242), and 21st home runs (105), and slugging percentage (.381). Third baseman Manny Machado leads the Padres across the board in batting average (.301), home runs (21), RBI (70), on-base percentage (.370), and hits (124). Newly acquired superstar Juan Soto is batting .326 with 14 hits during his first 12 games with the Padres. 

Prior to the games on Aug. 16, the Marlins ranked 21st in home runs (105), 24th in batting average (.235), 26th in on-base percentage (.298) and 27th in slugging percentage (.370) and RBI (408). First baseman Garrett Cooper leads the Marlins in batting average (.272), and on-base percentage (.346). Star second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., who is on the injured list, is tops on the Marlins in home runs (14) and RBI (45). First baseman Jesus Aguilar leads the Marlins in home runs (15), RBI (47), and hits (93). Star second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. is on the injured list. 

Leading up to the game on Aug. 16, the Padres were 54-63-1 against the spread overall and 32-29 against the spread on the road. In terms of over/under, the Padres were 55-60-3 overall and 30-29-2 on the road. 

Prior to the game on Aug. 16, the Marlins were 52-64 against the spread overall and 21-35 against at home. For over/under, the Marlins are 50-61-5 overall and 26-27-3 at home. 

Behind a dominant performance from Lopez, the Marlins will muster enough run support to edge the Padres.
