The Rays defeated the Yankees 4-2 in the series opener. Pitcher Drew Rasmussen earned the victory and allowed no runs while tossing 10 strikeouts. Wander Franco tallied three hits, two runs, and two RBI in the win for the Rays. 

The Yankees are atop the division by 3.5 over the Rays heading into the game on Sept. 10. The Yankees are second to only the Houston Astros in the AL. Third baseman DJ LeMahieu has 118 hits and an on-base percentage of .358. First baseman Anthony Rizzo is second on the Yankees in home runs (30) and RBI (71).

Prior to the games on Sept. 10, the Rays ranked 16th in batting average (.243), 19th in on-base percentage (.312), 20th in RBI (550), 21st in slugging percentage (.384), and 24th  in home runs (122). Third baseman Yandy Diaz leads the Rays in batting average (.290) and on-base percentage (.399). Left fielder Randy Arozarena is tops on the Rays in home runs (19), RBI (76) and hits (136). 

The Rays defeated the Yankees in two out of the three contests in St. Petersburg from Sept. 2-4. 

The Rays are 66-70 against the spread overall and 32-33 against the spread on the road. For over/under, the Rays are 61-66-9 overall and 30-32-3 on the road. 

The Yankees are 60-79 against the spread overall and 31-39 against the spread at home. In terms of over/under, the Yankees are 64-71-4 overall and 33-35-2 at home. 

The Yankees will cruise to a dominant victory behind a masterful pitching performance by German.
