Conor McGregor returning to UFC

Per news reports, Conor McGregor is expected to return to the Octagon in January 2020 for a welterweight bout (170 pounds) against Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone.

UFC president Dana White confirmed that McGregor has inked his deal and Cerrone is on board. White said, "Conor has signed and Cowboy is ready to go."

The matchup will take place on Saturday Jan. 18, 2020 at UFC 246 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Oddsmakers at Caesars Sportsbook posted early odds on the fight.

Conor McGregor -240
Donald Cerrone +190

McGregor (21-4) has not fought since Oct. 6. 2018 when he lost to Khabib Nurmagomedov via submission in the fourth round.

His previous fight before the setback to Nurmagomedov was a boxing match on Aug. 26, 2017 against Floyd Mayweather Jr., who defeated McGregor via TKO in the 10th round

McGregor hasn't won a fight in the UFC since 2016 when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez on Nov. 12, 2016 at Madison Square Garden in New York. That victory made him the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight divisions simultaneously, which were the Featherweight and Lightweight Championships.

Some pundits have labeled this fight against Cerrone (36-13) as a tune-up or 'get right' fight for McGregor. Cowboy, a fan favorite, holds the record for most wins (23) and finishes (16) in UFC history but his current form isn't in great shape.

Cerrone has dropped his last two decisions, both coming inside distance. A setback to Tony Ferguson at UFC 238 on June 8, 2018 from Chicago was called after two rounds by doctor stoppage. Then Cowboy was stopped in the first round to Justin Gaethje at UFC on ESPN +16 from Vancouver on Sept. 14, 2019.

From 2016 to 2018, Cerrone fought 10 fights in the welterweight division and he posted a 6-4 record. Eight of the 10 fights ended inside distance and two of his losses came in the first two rounds to quality opponents in Darren Till and Jorge Masvidal.

McGregor has fought two welterweight fights and he went 1-1 with both outcomes coming against Nate Diaz.
