2022 Army Black Knights Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions

2022 ARMY BLACK KNIGHTS BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW

Winning at Army hasn’t been easy since the legendary Red Blaik was the head coach of the Black Knights in the 1940s and 1950s. Blaik compiled a record of 121-33-10 in his 18 seasons in charge of Army, and his 121 wins will likely never be surpassed. Jeff Monken is one of a handful of coaches that has had success at West Point over the last 65 years, and he became the second-winningest coach in Army history last year after the Black Knights went 9-4.

Army loses starting quarterback Christian Anderson from last year’s roster, but the Black Knights have two other pivots with starting experience. Tyhier Tyler is likely to be the starter, but Jamel Jones will get some looks running the triple option too. Tyler and Jones have both shown they can run the ball well and know when to pitch. Unfortunately, neither Tyler nor Jones has the same polish as a passer.

The top two running backs from last season return as well. Tyrell Robinson ran for 605 yards, and he averaged 8.5 YPC as the most explosive option in the backfield. Jakobi Buchanan was a workhorse fullback that had the plurality of the carries, and he ran for 12 touchdowns. Army will use a lot of players in the backfield though, as they like to have fresh legs with the triple option.

Isaiah Alston is the only real target in the passing game, and he led Army with 22 receptions for 449 yards and three touchdowns last season. The next leading receiver that wasn’t a running back had just five catches, so Alston will be the target when Army looks to pass.

The Black Knights have a wrecking ball at outside linebacker in Andre Carter. It’s rare for Army to have an early round draft pick, but Carter is expected to be a Day 2 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and could be a first-round selection. Carter was a Second Team All-American and had 15.5 sacks last season. He accounted for more than half of Army’s sack total, highlighting his importance.

This defense returns five other starters besides Carter. Jabari Moore is a solid cornerback, and Marquel Broughton led the Black Knights in tackles in 2021.

Army should be bowl eligible once again as the Black Knights have a very manageable schedule. Their toughest games are road trips to Coastal Carolina and Wake Forest, and they play two FCS teams and three of the worst FBS programs in the country in Louisiana-Monroe, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. The oddsmakers pegged this one on the nose, but nine wins is a bit more likely than seven.

Best Bet: Over 8 Wins (-115)

ARMY BLACK KNIGHTS ODDS TO WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

+100000

Even if the Black Knights run the table and beat all of their opponents by double digits, they will not compete for the national title with this weak schedule. Army only plays one Power Five opponent, and there’s a good chance that none of the teams they play end the season in the AP Top 25.
