2022 NEW MEXICO STATE AGGIES BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW

Doug Martin led the New Mexico State Aggies to their first bowl win since 1960 in 2017, but Martin had just one winning season in nine years in Las Cruces. He was given a lot of time because this is one of the most impossible jobs to succeed at in the country, yet the administration had to move on after the Aggies went just 4-29 against FBS foes over the last three seasons.

The new head coach at New Mexico State is Jerry Kill. He was a pretty successful head coach at FCS Southern Illinois and Northern Illinois, and he turned around Minnesota before stepping aside in 2015. Kill has had several seizures on the sidelines in recent years, but the allure of coaching has brought him back despite his health issues.

There is not much for Kill to work with in Las Cruces. The Aggies were ranked 128th in the country in SP+ last year. New Mexico State only ranked ahead of UConn and UMass in this department, and the offense is likely to be one of the worst in the country with just four returning starters.

New Mexico State’s starting quarterback, running back, and top three receivers from last year have all departed. That led to Kill bringing in as much JUCO talent as he could sign, starting with projected starting quarterback Diego Pavia. The top two running backs are both transfers, and about half the receiving corps is made up of transfers too.

The Aggies have a lot less questions on defense as nine starters return from 2021. Chris Ojoh was solid with a team-high six sacks and 10 tackles for loss, and Donovan King flashed at moments too. Landing Michigan transfer Andre Seldon could be huge too as Seldon is immediately the highest-rated recruit coming out of high school on the roster by a mile.

NMSU has some winnable games on the schedule. The Aggies travel to UTEP and UMass, and they host Florida International, San Jose State, and Lamar. They are not going to be bowl eligible, but the Over is a good possibility as Kill knows how to coach fundamentals.
