Arizona State Sun Devils vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys Picks, Predictions, Odds

The Oklahoma State Cowboys will look to break into the AP Top 10 with a win over the Arizona State Sun Devils this week. Mike Gundy seems to have the Oklahoma State offense humming once more after a down 2021 campaign, and this will be the program’s last chance to make an impression until its Big 12 schedule kicks off on October 1.

ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS VS. OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS BETTING PREDICTION

Although Arizona State comfortably defeated FCS Northern Arizona last week, this is a program in disarray. Herm Edwards could be pushed out the door at any moment once the NCAA investigation into the Sun Devils is complete, and that doesn’t bode well for continuity. Oklahoma State is a double-digit favorite by the CFB betting odds for a reason and will cover the number.

Score Prediction: Oklahoma State 49, Arizona State 24
Best Bet: Oklahoma State -12.5 (-110)

ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS BETTING ANALYSIS

In the ever-changing world of college football during the transfer era, Arizona State lost quarterback Jayden Daniels to LSU and replaced him with Florida transfer Emory Jones. This is a downgrade for the Sun Devils even though Daniels appeared to hit his ceiling in Tempe, as Jones is not a very accurate passer or good decision maker. He didn’t make any mistakes in the opener though, completing 13 of 18 passes for 152 yards.

At least the Sun Devils did land a star running back in the transfer portal. Xazavian Valladay was one of the most underrated runners in the nation at Wyoming, and he is becoming more well-known in a major conference. Valladay ran the ball 15 times for 116 yards and two scores in last week’s easy win.

Arizona State could be pretty one-dimensional on offense for a while. Jones targeted tight end Messiah Swinson often last week, and the only other experienced wide-out on the Sun Devils coming into the season is Andre Johnson. That could be an issue against Oklahoma State’s secondary.

The Sun Devils only return four starters on defense from 2021. They had a superb unit last year and Edwards is known as a defensive coach, but they could have their hands full against Mike Gundy and Oklahoma State this week.

OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS BETTING ANALYSIS

Spencer Sanders had a down 2021 campaign, and he was downright dreadful in the Big 12 Championship Game. Sanders showed no signs of that performance bothering him in the season opener though, completing 28 of 41 passes for 406 yards and four touchdowns in a rout of Central Michigan in Week 1. He also ran for 57 yards and two touchdowns, showcasing the dual-threat ability that has made him a four-year starter in Stillwater.

Although the final score was 58-44 in favor of Oklahoma State, the game was decided at halftime. The Cowboys led 44-15 at the break, and the final score was only close because the Broncos scored three touchdowns in the final 13 minutes.

Oklahoma State has a solid offensive line, and the Cowboys are stacked with playmakers at the skill positions as usual. Braydon Johnson and Brennan Presley can both make things happen at receiver, and Dominic Richardson is tough to take down.

Some are bemoaning the state of the defense without defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and rookie Detroit Lions linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez. The Chippewas did have four drives of 35 yards or more in the first half, but the Cowboys only allowed two scores before garbage time. This unit is still a work in progress though with just four starters returning from last year’s fantastic unit.
