MARYLAND TERRAPINS vs. MICHIGAN WOLVERINES BETTING PREDICTION

Since joining the Big Ten, the Maryland Terrapins have largely been dominated by the Michigan Wolverines. Maryland won the very first meeting between these teams as Big Ten colleagues in 2014, but the Wolverines have won their last six games with the Terrapins by an average of 33.7 PPG. The smallest margin of victory for Michigan was by 21 points, so history says they will cover the number against Maryland on Saturday afternoon.

MARYLAND TERRAPINS BETTING ANALYSIS

Taulia Tagovailoa is one of the most exciting quarterbacks in college football. Tagovailoa completed 69.2% of his passes for 3,860 yards with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last year, and he would probably be a first-round draft pick if he was three inches taller. The senior quarterback is off to another strong start in 2022, completing 68 of 88 passes for 895 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions.

Maryland has some quality receivers too, led by Rakim Jarrett. The former five-star recruit has 11 catches for 196 yards and a touchdown through three games, and he was a Third Team All-Big Ten selection in 2021. Jacob Copeland had a great game against Charlotte but caught just one pass in wins over SMU and Buffalo, as Jeshaun Jones has seen more targets.

Roman Hemby is the leading rusher on the Terps with 32 carries for 294 yards and three touchdowns. Antwain Littleton II is a solid backup, and we saw Tagovailoa show mobility than we are used to last week against SMU. The Terps returned all five starters from last year along the offensive line, and this will be their first real test.

The Terrapins rank 56th in Defensive SP+. Opponents have been able to have success against this young secondary, as Maryland is allowing 273.7 YPG through the air. The front seven probably won’t be able to pressure McCarthy in this game, so these defensive backs will really have their work cut out for them.

MICHIGAN WOLVERINES BETTING ANALYSIS

J.J. McCarthy will be Michigan’s starting quarterback in this game. McCarthy and Cade McNamara had split time being the Wolverines’ signal caller through the first few weeks of the season, but McNamara suffered a leg injury in last week’s win against UConn and is expected to be out until October.

McCarthy is a more mobile quarterback than McNamara, and he has been on the field more often than his teammate. He has completed 30 of 34 passes for 473 yards and three touchdowns, and he has run the ball seven times for 73 yards and a score in easy wins over Colorado State, Hawaii, and Connecticut. This offense is more explosive with McCarthy on the field, but he isn’t as accurate of a passer as McNamara.

The Wolverines have run for 694 yards and 15 touchdowns through their first three games, and they are averaging 6.0 YPC as a team. Blake Corum is the No. 1 back and is a fringe Heisman Trophy contender. Corum has run for 235 yards and seven touchdowns, and he is averaging 6.9 YPC. C.J. Stokes and Donovan Edwards are going to see action too, and they should all have success behind one of the best offensive lines in the country.

This defense lost Aidan Hutchinson, David Ojabo, and five other starters from last season. Michigan has recruited well on this side of the ball, but this will be the Wolverines first real test so far in 2022. The Michigan defense is ranked 10th in SP+ coming into this game, and they are allowing under 200 YPG.
