Betting on the Purdue Boilermakers

While the 2010s were unkind to Purdue football, the Boilermakers are looking to build on some early momentum in the 2020s after winning nine games, including the Music City Bowl, in 2021.

Purdue Boilermakers Overview

Purdue football has existed since the late-1800s, but serious title contention has eluded the Boilermakers for the majority of each century during which it’s competed.

The program has certainly had successful runs and produced NFL talent, but it has struggled to establish itself as a consistent threat to the powers that be in the Big Ten.

The Boilermakers’ best stretch came in the Drew Brees era, from 1998-2000. In each of Brees’ seasons as the full-time starter, Purdue finished the year ranked inside the top-25 of the AP Poll.

In the legendary quarterback’s final season at the helm, Purdue won a share of the Big Ten conference title and played in the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1966. Unfortunately, the team fell to Washington, but it nonetheless marked the conclusion of one of the program’s greatest seasons.

After Brees’ departure, the Boilermakers struggled to recapture that magic, but the team is now looking to build off of arguably its best season since the early 2000s.

Betting on Purdue in Indiana

Luckily for Indiana bettors, sports betting has been legal in the Hoosier State since 2019. Retail betting went live in September, and online betting launched a month later.

Indiana welcomed many of the industry leaders into its market, including DraftKings and BetMGM. Despite the expansive and free nature of Indiana’s sports betting market, Purdue University strictly prohibits sports wagering.

That’s not limited to a geo-fenced area around campus either. Even students enrolled online at the university are subject to the rules in place. If any student or faculty chooses to bet on sports, they subject themselves to expulsion or termination.

As a result, the Boilermakers don’t have any sportsbook partners and probably aren’t in the market for one. While those involved with the university can’t partake, Hoosiers throughout the state can easily bet on their teams.

Bettors looking to place a wager on Purdue can expect to find something like this at one of the state’s retail locations or on one of the available sportsbook apps:

-          Purdue -6.5

-          Indiana +6.5

In this hypothetical matchup of in-state rivals, the Boilermakers are 6.5-point favorites over Indiana. Purdue bettors need them to win by at least 7 points to cover the spread. If Purdue loses the game, or wins by fewer than 7, Indiana covers the spread.
