How to Handicap the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint

We ditch the traditional format for alphabetical order due to the mix of U.S. and Euro runners as well as age and lack of experience. Numbers 15,16,17 are also eligible.

9-After Five closed well in both his debut at Kentucky Downs against maidens and last out in the G3 Futurity before finishing second in both.

8-Amanzi Yimpilo broke her maiden at Gulfstream then finished third in the Bolton Landing at Saratoga behind the talented Toby’s Heart. Last out, she shipped to Santa Anita to beat the boys in the Speakeasy from a stalking position.

15-Blame the Booze broke his maiden in the mud at Belmont before finishing second in the With Anticpation over a sloppy Saratoga course, both intended for turf, before tiring in the G3 Bourbon on turf around two turns.

10-Bodenheimer punched his ticket for this with a gate-to-wire score in the Indian Summer, at this trip and over the course, most recently. Earlier this year, he broke his maiden by over 11 lengths on debut at Canterbury and was off the board in the Juvenile Turf at Kentucky Downs (JT at KD) over a soft course and also won a minor-stakes on dirt at Prairie Meadows.

4-County Final rolled on turf in his debut at Churchill before finishing second in the G3 Bashford Manor and winning the Tyro, both on dirt. He finished fourth in both the JT at KD and the Futurity.

5-Cowan was third in the JT at KD and second in Indian Summer, both with blinkers. He began his career with a maiden win and fifth place finish as the heavy favorite in the Ellis Park Juvenile, both on dirt.

12-Dirty Dangle ships down from Woodbine with a maiden win on their synthetic surface first out and an off-the-pace tally in the Woodbine Cares on turf most recently.

14-Golden Pal is the 8-5 morning line favorite and could have been THE most impressive juvenile at Saratoga this summer when he broke his maiden in the Skidmore, going this distance in 1:00 4/5, just ticks off the track record, a remarkable feat for a two-year-old. Earlier this season he finished second in his debut on dirt at Gulfstream and missed by just a neck in the G2 Norfolk at Royal Ascot.

16-Gypsy King owns just one win from five starts, a maiden tally three back at Ellis Park and finished fifth in the Futurity last out.

11-Into the Sunrise cuts back in distance off of a solid fourth place finish after setting the pace in the Bourbon at 8.5 furlongs. He broke his maiden in his first turf start three back before finishing second in the Soaring Free at Woodbine.

3-Lipizzaner ships over from Europe sporting a record of two wins and three seconds from seven starts. He was second in a G3 in Ireland two starts back before winning in England less than two weeks before this.

1-Mighty Gurkha is winless in four starts overseas but has won both of his starts over synthetic tracks, including a G3 event two back.

7-Momos set the pace before grudgingly giving way to finish third in the Futurity, his first turf start. He broke his maiden at Saratoga in his debut then finished third in the G2 Saratoga Special behind Jackie’s Warrior, both on dirt.

13-Second of July rallied from just off the pace to win his debut at over 68/1 then came from next-to-last to upset the Futurity at over 15/1, both going six furlongs at Belmont within three weeks of each other.

17-Trade Deal had a nightmare stretch run in the Futurity and ultimately finished sixth. He finished second in his debut at Indiana Grand before breaking his maiden next out at Kentucky Downs.

6-Ubettabelieveit has won three of his five starts in England, including a G2. He’s raced exclusively on straightaway courses so he’ll be racing around a turn for the first time.

2-Windy City Red broke his maiden on the Golden Gate synthetic surface then missed by a half-length when rallying for third in the Speakeasy.

Juvenile Turf Sprint Predictions

If I’m Right...

The draw didn’t do the favorite (Golden Pal) any favors. He’s going to have to be much the best and I do believe he is now a little vulnerable but can obviously still just be THAT much better than this field

Live Longshot...

10-Bodenheimer is as fast if not faster than all except Golden Pal on paper and he’ll likely be higher than his 8/1 morning line odds.
