How to Handicap the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf

We ditch the traditional format for alphabetical order due to the mix of U.S. and Euro runners as well as age and lack of experience. Numbers 15,16 are also eligible.

3-Abarta closed resolutely to break his maiden at Ellis Park on debut before finishing second in the G2 Bourbon after dropping back when between horses and rallying down the center.

15-Barrister Tom won his first two on turf, including the Kentucky Downs Juvenile at 44-1 before failing to fire when eighth in the Bourbon.

9-Battleground ships from Europe having won his last two, including a G2 last out, at seven furlongs.

5-Cadillac a son of Lope de Vega, a sire Americans have become familiar with, won a G2 in Ireland two back going this distance, his second win in four tries.

13-Devilwala has finished off the board in three starts since breaking his maiden on debut in England.

10-Ebeko finished second in the Del Mar Juvenile Turf in his U.S. debut then closed to win the Zuma Beach at Santa Anita. He won one of three starts in Europe before coming stateside.

7-Fire at Will broke his maiden in the off-the-turf With Anticpation at Saratoga in his second start then walked the dog on the front end to win the G2 Pilgrim at 13-1 at Belmont last out.

12-Go Athletico has finished in the exacta in all five starts in France, including a G3 win two back.

11-Gretzky the Great sports three wins and a second from four starts, all at Woodbine, winning both the Soaring free and G1 Summer going a mile in his most recent starts, from just off the pace.

16-Harlan Estate broke his maiden in his third start last out, his second at this distance.

14-The Lir Jet won his first two, including the G2 Norfolk at Royal Ascot in his second start but is winless in three starts since including two G1 races recently.

6-Mutasaabeq is the lukewarm favorite on the morning line at 5-1. He broke his maiden and finished third in the G1 Hopeful, both on dirt at Saratoga, before exploding from last in the stretch to win the Bourbon here last out.

2-New Mandate started his career with two third place finishes then won his last three, including a G2 at this distance.

8-Outadore stretches out off a maiden win going 5.5 furlongs and Juvenile Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs going 6.5 furlongs.

4-Public Sector was rumored to be a good one and lived up to his billing when he stormed home to break his maiden in his debut at Saratoga. He couldn’t overcome a slow pace when second in the Pilgrim last out.

1-Sealiway has won four of his six starts, including a G1 on Arc day at Longchamp most recently. This will be his first start beyond seven furlongs.

Juvenile Turf Predictions

If I’m Right...

The American-based runners appear to be pretty talented and some of the Euros were not helped by the draw.

Live Longshot...

3-Abarta was almost as impressive as the winner of the Bourbon, 6-Mutasaabeq. He’ll be at least twice the price too if his 12-1 on the morning line is accurate.
