How to Handicap the Juvenile Turf

We ditch the traditional format for alphabetical order due to the mix of U.S. and Euro runners as well as age and lack of experience. Numbers 15,16 are also eligible.

2 - ALBAHR didn’t disappoint despite a tough start when odds on in his first North American start at Woodbine in the G1 Summer, earning a speed figure that puts him in the thick of this one. Godolphin owned gelding looms plenty dangerous for a barn that has meant business with its limited starters on the continent this year.

New York bred 13 - COINAGE used his speed to wire the G3 With Anticipation at Saratoga in late summer before a rough break subsequently compromised his best chance at odds on at Monmouth Park. He’ll look to get off to a better beginning and put his best asset to good use but the outside draw is no bargain.

12 - CREDIBILITY took a good step forward at a big price while returning to the grass last time at Keeneland. He’ll need to keep improving to have a say in the outcome in this field.

3 - DAKOTA GOLD is perfect from two starts, earning figures that fit well here. The New York bred did get a solid pace in front of him in taking his turf debut at Monmouth Park but he showed he’s capable of settling and making a run around rivals.

16 - DETROIT CITY while tackle two turns and a route of ground for the first time after finding Keeneland sprint stakes rivals a little too tough for his liking. Maybe he’s part of the pace if he draws in.

English import 14 - DUBAWI LEGEND ran well to hold second money in a G1 at Newmarket last month. He’ll have more ground to deal with today but can’t be dismissed.

8 - GLOUNTHAUNE has taken two of three starts overseas and will make his stateside debut for a barn that knows what it is doing with this type. Rival Dubawi Legend did beat him quite handily two starts back at Newmarket.

11 - GRAFTON STREET ran very well in the G1 Summer at Woodbine before moving back to synthetic footing to break his maiden. Maybe with some confidence in him the return to the lawn will help him move forward.

7 - GREAT MAX tries a route of ground for the first time in his stateside debut. He’s already had a handful of tries and his recent effort in Ireland wasn’t anything to get excited about.

6 - MACKINNON was the best juvenile turfer in Southern California this year and while he just continued to get the job done, he didn’t run particularly fast. Two of his three straight wins have come over the local turf course.

1 - MODERN GAMES comes in from England in search of his third straight win. His first try in Group company was his best yet and it doesn’t appear as if the added ground will pose him much trouble.

Chad Brown trainee 10 - PORTFOLIO COMPANY held very well for second money after setting the pace in the G2 Pilgrim at Belmont Park last time out. Expecting he’ll be better with a target to chase and he could well get that in here.

15 - READY TO PURRFORM tries for his third straight score in as many races over as many different courses. He comes from a top barn and given his pedigree he certainly has a right to keep moving forward if he gets to meet the starter as the waters get deeper.

5 - SLIPSTREAM rallied to score sprinting after failing to settle early in Belmont Park’s G3 Futurity. Two turns is a question, but he goes for an outfit that excels with stretch outs and he has shown he has little issue passing runners.

9 - STOLEN BASE has taken well to the turf and did make a nice rally to get second money in Keeneland’s Bourbon Stakes. He’ll likely catch much firmer footing in his local debut, however, and his style will likely need a traffic free trip.

4 - TIZ THE BOMB has done little wrong since stretched out and then moved to the turf. He’ll face the toughest test of his career today, though, and from a figure standpoint does still need to take a step forward to have a big say in the outcome.

Juvenile Turf Predictions

If I’m Right…

Trainer Charlie Appleby will have this field over a barrel with Godolphin owned runners ALBAHR and MODERN GAMES. Albahr gets off to a better start than he did in his North American stakes winning debut at Woodbine and Modern Games continues where he left off at Newmarket while looking for his third victory in a row.

Live Longshot

With other attractive Euro based runners in the field, maybe DUBAWI LEGEND offers a little more value than he should. He was beaten just two lengths in a Group 1 event at Newmarket last out in his fastest effort yet.
