The History

Is It True upset the great Easy Goer in 1988. Unbridled’s Song out-dueled Hennessy to win the 1995 running in just his third start. Johannesburg shipped in from across the pond and halted Officer’s winning streak in 2001. Street Sense took the first step in breaking the Juvenile/ Kentucky Derby jinx by winning it in 2006, with Nyquist following in his hoof prints in 2015. Arazi put on his amazing display in the 1991 renewal at Churchill. In 2014, the Desormeaux brothers, trainer Keith and jockey Kent, teamed up with longshot Texas Red. Storm the Court posted the biggest upset in the 36-year history of the event when he defeated fellow longshot Anneau d’Or in 2019.

How to Handicap the Breeders' Cup Juvenile

Best

Maiden 10 - COMMANDPERFORMANCE ran a good second to rival Jack Christopher in the G1 Champagne at Belmont Park while making just his second career start. He’ll tackle two turns for the first time today, but the Todd Pletcher trainee is bred to flourish the added distance and this configuration.

The undefeated 12 - CORNICHE ran lights out in his unveiling here a couple of months ago, earning a big speed figure in that well backed maiden sprint score. He kicked away from his challengers again at a short price in Santa Anita’s G1 American Pharoah and while the number didn’t come back nearly as fast, he was very impressive in passing his first route test. Outside draw makes his task tougher.

1 - JACK CHRISTOPHER has shown sharp early foot in both of his starts and was quick to take to a tracking trip in the G1 Champagne which is rather uncommon in inexperienced young runners. Love the way he kicked away to the open lengths midstretch lead in that one, running his record to a perfect two for two. He’ll have a new configuration to deal with as well as this new venue, but with what he’s shown so far he’s the one they’ll have to beat.

Rest

6 - AMERICAN SANCTUARY had a troubled trip in the Breeders Futurity but still made some headway late while finishing behind some of these. Price will be right and a clean run should only help as he makes his third start going long.

8 - BAROSSA exits a workman like maiden score at Santa Anita in his second route attempt, The number he earned in that one wasn’t bad and he goes for a top barn, but the waters get much deeper in this heat.

5 - DOUBLE THUNDER has been improving with each start and he was a good second in the Breeders Futurity but don’t know that even with another move forward he can prove a serious threat today.

7 - GIANT GAME is a recent maiden breaker who did so with a moderate speed figure when stretched out at Keeneland. They did pay 500k for him at auction last year so the hopes are probably there but the connections also aim rather high in this one.

Don’t know just what Japanese invader 2 - JASPER GREAT defeated in his debut run across the Pacific but he did it in impressive fashion at a trip slightly longer than he’ll tackle today. He still has a lot to prove.

3 - OVIATT CLASS is a late runner with a distance pedigree who wasn’t far behind a couple of these in his stakes debut. He’ll hope for the pace to heat up in front of him.

4 - PAPPACAP was runner up to the front running Corniche in the G1 American Pharoah at Santa Anita in a career best speed figure effort last time out. Don’t know that he’ll be able to find much more today.

9 - PINEHURST is another undefeated Bob Baffert trained runner who does his running on the front end which could be a crowded spot in this race. Both of his wins did come over this track.

11 - TOUGH TO TAME ships in from the Midwest off a near miss at a big price in Churchill Downs’ G3 Iroquois Stakes. He’s on the improve but will need another improved try to get in the mix today and don’t think that will be on tap.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Predictions

If I’m Right…

With a handful of speed types signed on, things will move along rather rapidly on the front end, setting the table for off the pace types to have an impact. Maiden COMMANDPERFORMANCE takes advantage of the quick fractions and runs past them all and gives trainer Todd Pletcher his third victory in this event. Two turns will prove to be the undoing for JACK CHRISTOPHER, a brilliant son of top sprinter Munnings who has done everything right up until now, but he’s able to hold on for second money, reversing the result of Belmont Park’s G1 Champagne.

Live Longshot

OVIATT CLASS didn’t have much of a shot behind front running winner Corniche while prepping for this in the American Pharoah, but he ran on to be well clear for third money and the pace should suit him much better at a big price today.
