Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves Betting Predictions

The Phillies enter this matchup second in the NL East standings, eight games behind the New York Mets for first place. Philadelphia has lost five of their last eight games, but managed to win game one of this series 7-3. The Phillies offense is having a productive season, averaging 4.54 runs per game. Philadelphia’s bullpen has been struggling and are a big factor as to why this team is below .500. The left-handed pitcher Ranger Suarez is scheduled to start on Wednesday. Suarez is 4-2 in six games this season with an ERA of 4.12 and has given up 42 hits, 18 earned runs, and struck out 33 batters in 39.1 innings of work.

The Atlanta Braves are currently third in the NL East, nine games behind the Mets for first place, but just one game back from the Phillies. The Braves have not been able to find a rhythm this season and have lost six of their last 10 games. The offense ranks in the bottom half of the league and have scored three runs or less 16 times this season. The bullpen has struggled throughout the season and have allowed 25 runs over their last five games. Right-handed pitcher Charlie Morton is scheduled to take the mound Wednesday. Morton is 3-3 in eight games this season with an ERA of 4.95 and has given up 39 hits, 22 earned runs, and struck out 37 batters in 40.0 innings.

I like the value in the Phillies moneyline here in game-three. Morton is not having a great season and the Phillies should be able to take advantage with their bats. Despite Philadelphia’s bullpen not playing well, Suarez has looked solid this season and has not allowed more than three runs in a single game. Backing the Phillies moneyline in this matchup.

Philadelphia Phillies Betting Analysis

Prior to the conclusion of game two on Tuesday, the Phillies are 20-22 SU, 21-21 ATS, and have an O/U record of 21-19-2. The total has gone under in five of Philadelphia’s last seven games. Going against this trend, the total has gone over in their last five road games. The Phillies have gone 1-5 SU in their last six games when playing on the road against Atlanta and are 9-9 SU on the road this season.

Philadelphia has been hitting the ball well this season. As a team the Phillies have a batting average of .249 (6th), on base percentage of .312 (16th), slugging percentage of .410 (4th), and have scored 192 runs (8th). Designated hitter Bryce Harper has been excellent with a batting average of .292, nine home runs, and 27 RBIs. Second baseman Jean Segura is also having a nice season with a batting average of .294, six home runs, and 17 RBIs.

The Phillies bullpen will need to get it together if the plan on keeping things close with the Mets for lead of the division. As a team they are allowing opponents a batting average of .243 (21st), have a WHIP of 1.28 (19th), and have given up 178 runs (19th). Ranger Suarez is scheduled to start on Wednesday. Suarez is 4-2 in games this season with an ERA of 4.12 and has given up 42 hits, 18 earned runs, and struck out 33 batters in 39.1 innings of work. Suarez worked mostly as a relief pitcher last season, but made four appearances against the Braves and did not allow a single run.

Atlanta Braves Betting Analysis

After playing 42 games the Braves are 19-23 SU, 20-22 ATS, and have an O/U record of 23-16-3. The total has gone over in six of Atlanta’s last seven home games. Following this trend, the total has gone over in seven of their last 10 games when playing a division rival. Atlanta is 5-1 SU in their last six home games against the Phillies and 10-12 SU at home this season.

The Braves have struggled to get much going with their bats. As a team Atlanta has a batting average of .227 (24th), on base percentage of .299 (20th), slugging percentage of .391 (15th), and have scored 172 runs (18th). The first baseman Matt Olson has been the team's most consistent hitter with a batting average of .244, four home runs, and 15 RBIs. Shortstop Dansby Swanson leads the team in RBIs with 20, to go along with five home runs and a batting average of .236.

Atlanta’s bullpen is right on par with how the offense has been playing. As a team they are allowing opponents a batting average of .243 (21st), have a WHIP of 1.29 (21st), and have an ERA of 3.93 (20th). Right-handed pitcher Charlie Morton is scheduled to take the mound Wednesday. Morton is 3-3 in eight games this season with an ERA of 4.95 and has given up 39 hits, 22 earned runs, and struck out 37 batters in 40.0 innings. Morton went 3-3 SU in six starts against the Phillies last season.

Key Players to Watch

  • PHI: Bryce Harper - DH (Last Game: TBD)
  • PHI: Jean Segura - 2B (Last Game: TBD)
  • ATL: Matt Olson - 1B (Last Game: TBD)
  • ATL: Ronald Acuna, Jr. - OF (Last Game: TBD)

Probable Pitchers

  • PHI: Ranger Suarez - LHP (4-2, 4.12 ERA, 33 K, 1.45 WHIP)
  • ATL: Charlie Morton - RHP (3-3, 4.95 ERA, 37 K, 1.45 WHIP)

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves Betting Conclusion

The biggest weakness for Philadelphia this season has been their bullpen, but Suarez is playing well and should see success against a struggling Braves lineup. Morton has not looked good throughout his eight starts and I expect him to have a tough time against the Phillies lineup. Take advantage of the Phillies being underdogs in this matchup and back the Moneyline.
