Knicks vs Pacers Picks & Prediction

Before the playoffs even began, the Knicks were already behind the 8-ball in the injury department in the absence of 3-time All-Star Julius Randle. However, throughout this series, the injuries have really piled up for New York, with key pieces such as OG Anunoby, Mitchell Robinson, and Bojan Bogdanovic also joining Randle on the sidelines. But fortunately, none of it matters against a Pacers team that ranked 24th in defensive rating (118.1) during the regular season, and ranks 13th in defense (118.6) among 16 playoff teams since the start of the postseason, as the Knicks enter Game 6 of this series with a 3-2 lead, and two chances to close out Indiana and earn a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals.

If you examine the box score from the latest meeting between these teams though, you’ll notice that Indiana’s defense wasn’t the issue in Game 5, as the Pacers posted a true shooting percentage of 56% and effective field goal percentage of 51%, while comparatively, the Knicks posted percentages of 55% true shooting and 53% EFG – which may seem like it would equate to a competitive battle, but it sure wasn’t.

Instead, it resulted in a 30-point blowout win for New York, and there’s two main reasons why: 1.) Rebounding and 2.) Turnovers.

The Pacers secured only 24 defensive rebounds and five (5) offensive rebounds, as an entire team, in Game 5 – corralling less than 55% of the potential defensive boards up for grabs in the contest, which gave the Knicks an extra chance at a bucket on nearly half of their missed shots with an offensive rebound percentage of 45.5%. Then, to add fuel to the fire, Indiana was also -9 in the turnover department, and the Pacers’ defense starts to look real bad, real quick when the opposing team is +29 in total field goal attempts like New York was in Game 5 between these teams.

Tuesday’s loss was a brutal experience for Pacers bettors, but some of the underlying metrics suggest a quick bounce-back may be on the horizon for Indiana at home in Game 6. The Pacers posted a point differential of +37 over NY in their first two home games of this series – and while their latest outing might have made it seem like Jalen Brunson is an invincible superhuman, with 44 points on 51% shooting in Game 5, the Pacers are still more than capable of beating NY if they can strike a balance in the some of the hustle categories (rebounds, turnovers, etc.), especially if they continue to shoot 51% from the field and 42% from 3-point range like they have throughout this series. I’ll lay the points with Indy in Game 6.
