Texans vs Ravens Betting Prediction & Odds for NFL Divisional Playoff Game

Matchup Spread Total Moneyline

The first matchup of the season between these teams took place all the way back in Week 1 – and both offensive units struggled to get the wheels spinning in the first half, as the Ravens went to the halftime break clinging onto a 7-6 lead in the very first start of CJ Stroud’s career, before eventually managing to pull away with a 25-9 victory down the stretch over this young Texans team.

As we’ve all come to learn, however, a lot can change over the course of an NFL season – and by football measures, that Week 1 matchup between Baltimore and Houston happened a very long time ago. At this point, the Texans have evolved into a far more complete product than they were in their season-opener.

The Texans stumbled out to a 2-3 skid in their first five contests. However, ever since their bumpy start, the Texans are 8-3 in their last 11 games started by Stroud – while averaging over 24 PPG and holding 8 of their 11 opponents to less than 20 points across their latest stretch.

That said, the spread for this week’s playoff rematch doesn’t seem to indicate much change in the balance of power between these two teams. According to VegasInsider’s Patrick Everson, the SuperBook opened the line for this contest at Ravens -9.5 and still sits in that range at most shops early in the week – which is the same exact number Baltimore closed at ahead of the Week 1 matchup between these teams (BAL -9.5).

With that in mind, I believe Baltimore is laying way too many points in this spot. The Ravens have asserted their dominance time after time throughout this season – and make no mistake about it, the correct team is favored in this matchup.

That said, this certainly isn’t the first time Lamar Jackson and this Ravens team have entered the playoffs with sky high expectations – and what does history tell us? The Ravens are 1-3 in their four playoff matchups with Lamar at QB – and Lamar has been pretty terrible in those games, completing just 56% of his pass attempts for 225 yards per game to go along with three passing TDs, five INTs, and zero rushing TDs.

Given the historical data, the Ravens simply shouldn’t be trusted in this spot, especially laying such a large number. While on the other side of that same coin, the oddsmakers aren’t giving the Texans nearly enough credit for the impressive brand of football they’ve played during the back half of the season – as well as the opening round of the playoffs. I’m taking the points with Houston.

Houston Texans Betting Analysis

The Texans were listed as 2.5-point home underdogs against Cleveland in the Wild Card Round – and hand up, I bet on the Browns. Personally, I believed that Houston’s inexperience would play a big role against Jim Schwartz and the Browns elite defense, especially in their second matchup against each other.

However, to my surprise, the Texans were actually the team that learned more from the first matchup between these teams – and Stroud picked apart one of the best defenses in the league with ease in his postseason debut as he completed 16-of-21 pass attempts for 274 yards to go along with three TDs and zero INTs in a blowout win over Cleveland.

Look, you win some and you lose some. This is a tough business. But part of becoming a good analyst is having the ability to admit when you were wrong – and I was very wrong about Houston last week. I’m done doubting Stroud and this Texans team. This isn’t your typical rookie QB-head coach combo.

Baltimore Ravens Betting Analysis

There’s no denying the fact that the Ravens have been the best team in the NFL this season, and Lamar Jackson very much deserves his second MVP award. However, in theory, if the Ravens lose this game and Lamar goes on to win MVP, that would give Lamar more MVP trophies than playoff wins – which would quite the narrative to wrestle with all offseason.

The stakes are very high for the Ravens in this contest – and if Houston manages to build a little bit of momentum early, Lamar will start to feel the pressure. I’m not quite sure if the Texans have what it takes to go to Baltimore and escape with a win in this game, but I certainly don’t trust the Ravens to run away with a double-digit win like they did in Week 1.
