Analysis of the Match

PSG demonstrated why they are one of the favorites to win the Club World Cup with a decisive victory over Atlético Madrid. There were no signs of a Champions League hangover; instead, we saw another strong performance from Luis Enrique’s side.

Even without their star striker, PSG quickly found their rhythm and took advantage of a fatigued Atlético team. A victory in their next match will secure them a place in the round of 16, allowing them to potentially rest some key players against the Seattle Sounders.

If PSG beats Botafogo, they could benefit from some much-needed rest, creating an incentive to replicate their previous performance against the Brazilians.

Botafogo could not have asked for a better start to the competition. They caught the Seattle Sounders off guard with two early goals, and for the most part, the Brazilians defended well.

Igor Jesus scored the winning goal, and the Brazilian international will once again be their primary threat in the air against PSG. With former Manchester United left-back Alex Telles handling set pieces—who assisted on their first goal—and with Artur and Jefferson Savarino providing width, Renato Paiva has assembled a potentially dangerous squad, particularly in aerial situations.

Realistically, they may struggle to withstand the pressure that PSG can exert on them. However, they understand how crucial goal difference is, especially now that Atlético has a goal differential of -4. If Botafogo can achieve a better result than 4-0, it will give them hope moving forward.

Botafogo and PSG, the reigning champions of their respective continents, are making their debuts in the Club World Cup.

Before securing a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Sounders, Botafogo had faced a non-CONMEBOL team only once, losing 3-0 to Pachuca in the second round of the 2024/25 Intercontinental Cup.
