Premier League 2019-20 Top Goalscorer Betting Preview

Despite the decline of the central striker, the Premier League is packed with players with the potential to score over 20 goals and land in the finishing positions of the top goalscorer market. Traditional forwards Harry Kane Sergio Aguero and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are joined by attacking midfielders-cum-wingers in Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Raheem Sterling at the top of a competitive market.

VAR makes its Premier League debut this season, and along with new handball laws, that means I expect a lot more penalties than usual this season. For that reason, I’m putting a line through Sterling, Mané, Alexandre Lacazette and any others who are not regular penalty-takers for their club. This is an angle that bookmakers seem to be underestimating.

Harry Kane leads the betting at 4/1, but at double the price I am staying in North London and picking Aubameyang at 8/1 to score the most goals. Arsenal are going to be even more attack-focused this year than last year given their weakness in defence, and they create a lot of chances. Aubameyang scored 22 goals last season, sharing the Golden Boot with Mané and Salah, and at that price he simply looks the best pick of the front runners.

Kane has scored 122 goals in the last five Premier League seasons, but injuries meant last season was his least productive with 17. He gets a huge percentage of Tottenham’s chances and will be up there again, but injuries and the fact he usually starts the season slowly are the big stumbling blocks.

Mohamed Salah is a 5/1 shot, and there are few arguments against him. However, having competed in the Africa Cup of Nations, he may feel a bit jaded at the start of the season. The same goes for 12/1 shot Mané whose Senegal side went all the way in the competition, losing the final 1-0 to Algeria.

Sergio Agüero is third at 11/2. Manchester City will be desperate to win the Champions League this year, and that could mean slightly more rotation in their league games leading to more game-time for Agüero’s highly able deputy Gabriel Jesus.

One interesting option at a big price is Tammy Abraham of Chelsea at 50/1. The youngster scored 25 goals on loan at promoted Aston Villa last season, and the current signs are that he will start in Frank Lampard’s first competitive match away at Old Trafford on Sunday. Should he start well, the centre-forward spot in that Chelsea team may be his for the season. Abraham can look clumsy, and there remain understandable doubts over his ability to lead the line for a top club, but he will get a lot of chances, and if he makes that spot his own that 50/1 could look very big.

At the biggest prices, Richarlison at 100/1 is of great interest. He was impressive in Brazil’s Copa America triumph cutting in from the left, and will continue playing a starring role at an improving Everton side this season. He is still only 22-years-old so there is more to come, and he could well improve on the 13 goals he managed last season.

Tips:
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at 8/1
Tammy Abraham at 50/1
Richarlison at 100/1
