This will be a pitching duel between a pair of right handers. Jameson Taillon will take the mound for the Yankees. Tyler Wells is the starting pitcher for the Orioles. Taillon is 10-2 with an ERA of 3.86. Wells has a 7-5 record and his ERA is 3.38.

As of July 21, the Yankees were atop the AL East, while the Orioles sat in the cellar. The Yankees hold a colossal 18-game advantage over the Orioles. The runner-up Tampa Bay Rays are a far distant 13 games back. 

Prior to July 22, the Yankees were 3-2 in their last five contests. The Yankees are coming off taking two out of three from the visiting archrival Boston Red Sox. They lost by one run in overtime in the opener, then routed the Red Sox by a combined 27-3 in the last two games. 

Before July 22, the Orioles were also 3-2 in their last five games. The Orioles dropped two of three from the host Rays in a divisional set. Baltimore’s 6-4 overtime victory came in the middle contest. The two losses were by a combined three runs. 

Taillon has allowed 101 hits, 14 home runs, and 12 walks, along with 82 strikeouts in 100.1 innings. The Yankees are 3-2 in Taillon’s last five outings. Wells has given up 71 hits, 10 home runs, and 21 walks, plus 59 strikeouts in 85.1 innings. The Orioles are 4-1 in Wells’ last five games. 

In Taillon’s last outing on July 16 vs. the Red Sox, he allowed one earned run and two hits with five strikeouts in six innings. In Wells’ most recent appearance vs. the Rays on July 15, he gave up three earned runs and six hits along with six strikeouts in 5.2 innings. 

As of July 21, the Yankees ranked first in slugging percentage (.445), RBI (472) and home runs (157), second in on-base percentage (.331) and 12th in batting average (.246).
