The Yankees began the series atop the AL East with the Blue Jays following up in second place. As of June 16, the Yankees held a sizable 9.5 games lead over the Blue Jays in the standings.

Going into June 16, the Yankees were on a six-game winning streak during a homestand vs. the Chicago Cubs and most recently against the division rival Tampa Bay Rays. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays split a four-game set at home vs. the divisional rival Baltimore Orioles

Montgomery has allowed 55 hits, 10 walks, and six home runs, while amassing 51 strikeouts. Stripling has given up 35 hits, eight walks, and three home runs, along with throwing 35 strikeouts. 

In his last outing, Stripling gave up no runs, no walks, and only one hit in the Blue Jays’ 6-0 shutout victory at the Detroit Tigers on June 12. In Montgomery’s last game, he pitched seven innings and allowed no runs, no walks, and five hits in the Yankees’ 8-0 blanking vs. the Cubs on June 11. 

The Yankees have taken six of the nine matchups vs. the Blue Jays this season. Most recently, the Yankees swept the Blue Jays in a home series on May 10-11. The Yankees lead the all-time series 379-310.
