The New York Yankees will travel to face the AL East rival Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night in the opener of a three-game weekend series. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. ET. Coverage will be on each team’s regional sports channel as well as MLB.TV. 

The pitching duel will be between a lefty and righty. Left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery will take the mound for the Yankees. Right-handed pitcher Ross Stripling is the starting pitcher for the Blue Jays. Montgomery has a 2-1 record with a 2.70 ERA. Stripling is 3-1 with an ERA of 3.14.

The Yankees began the series atop the AL East with the Blue Jays following up in second place. As of June 16, the Yankees held a sizable 9.5 games lead over the Blue Jays in the standings.

Going into June 16, the Yankees were on a six-game winning streak during a homestand vs. the Chicago Cubs and most recently against the division rival Tampa Bay Rays. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays split a four-game set at home vs. the divisional rival Baltimore Orioles. 

Montgomery has allowed 55 hits, 10 walks, and six home runs, while amassing 51 strikeouts. Stripling has given up 35 hits, eight walks, and three home runs, along with throwing 35 strikeouts. 

In his last outing, Stripling gave up no runs, no walks, and only one hit in the Blue Jays’ 6-0 shutout victory at the Detroit Tigers on June 12. In Montgomery’s last game, he pitched seven innings and allowed no runs, no walks, and five hits in the Yankees’ 8-0 blanking vs. the Cubs on June 11. 

The Yankees have taken six of the nine matchups vs. the Blue Jays this season. Most recently, the Yankees swept the Blue Jays in a home series on May 10-11. The Yankees lead the all-time series 379-310. 

This will be a matchup of high-powered offenses. 

Prior to June 16, the potent Yankees offense ranked first in home runs (100), second in slugging percentage (.437)  tied for third in RBI (295), and fourth in on-base percentage (.326). Right fielder Aaron Judge leads the team in batting average (.313), home runs (25), RBI (49), on-base percentage (.384), and hits (72). First baseman Anthony Rizzo is second on the team in home runs (15) and RBI (41). 

The Blue Jays are third in on-base percentage (.326) and slugging percentage (.431), tied for sixth in home runs (78), and 10th in RBI (278). First baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is tops for the Blue Jays in home runs (16) and RBI (39). Catcher Alejandro Kirk leads the Blue Jays in batting average (.318) and on-base percentage (.398). 

Going into June 16, the Yankees were 46-16 SU and 33-29 overall against the spread. The Yankees were 15-12 against the spread on the road. For over/under, the Yankees are 28-33-1 overall and 12-14-1 on the road. 

Leading up to the set, the Blue Jays are 37-25 SU and 29-33 overall against the spread. The Blue Jays are 12-19 against the spread at home. In terms of over/under, the Blue Jays are 29-31-2 overall and 15-15-1 at home.
