The Red Sox are in a free fall and welcome the Cleveland Guardians to town for their second game of the series. The American League playoff picture is going to be really crowded at the top, and both the Red Sox and Guardians will have a chance at the postseason.

Both Cleveland and Boston sit three games out of the wild card currently, but the Guardians are also just 3.5 games back from the American League Central lead. Seven teams are within five games fighting for just three spots.

Imaginably, this series could have serious implications for the season. The Red Sox are 49-48 in the American League East and just a half game ahead of the Baltimore Orioles for last place. The Sox are just 6-15 in the month of July, including the 3-1 series opening win against the Guardians on Monday. Cleveland is just 9-13 in July.

The Guardians will counter with Bryan Shaw, who has a 5.29 season ERA. Shaw only pitches the first inning typically and will again most likely be in an opener role again. In his 39 games, Shaw has pitched just 34 innings, allowed 31 hits, 20 earned runs, seven home runs and 16 free passes. His road ERA is 6.60, and playing in Fenway could be troublesome.
