The Braves and Giants continue a four-game set in Atlanta between two teams battling for Wild Card position in the National League. This is the first series of the season between the two squads, and they won’t meet again until mid-September.

Since dropping a three-game series to the Rockies earlier this month, the Giants have been on a roll, winning each of their past three series – including a sweep of the World Series favorite Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Braves, meanwhile, had been on quite a run of their own. Atlanta opened the month with 14-straight victories, including four consecutive series sweeps over the Colorado Rockies, Oakland A’s, Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals. However, they dropped two of three over the weekend against the Cubs, which broke both streaks.

Attempting to help get them back to their winning ways will be 23-year-old right-hander Spencer Strider, who will start today. Strider began the season in a bullpen role for the Braves but has worked his way into the rotation. In his first 11 appearances, he pitched at least four innings just one time. He has started in each of his last four appearances, completing at least four innings in all four outings.

Strider has won back-to-back starts with a pair of wins during the Braves 14-game winning streak. He pitched 5.2 innings against the Pirates on June 10, allowing no runs while striking out eight Pirates. Then, he followed that up with another 5.2 innings against the Nationals in his last time out, allowing two earned runs on just one hit with 11 punch-outs.

Strider is a pure strikeout artist: he has struck out 68 batters in just 44 innings of work. His move into the rotation hasn’t hindered his ability to miss bats, either; in 19.2 innings over his four starts, Strider has recorded 31 strikeouts, which equates to over 14 strikeouts per nine innings. While strikeouts haven’t been a problem, walks have been an issue for the young righty. Strider has issued 10 free passes in his four starts, averaging out to just over one base-on-balls for every other innings pitched. He’s been able to keep the ball in the park, though, allowing just two home runs this season.

The Giants have the ability to pack their lineup with lefty hitters against right-handed pitching, like they did on Sunday against the Pirates when they started six left-handed hitters. However, that may not be a path to success against Strider and the Braves. Strider has been tough on lefties this season, allowing just a .167/.235/.256 slash line against them this season. He’s also recorded 35 strikeouts vs. just eight walks in 98 plate appearances against lefties.
