2022 Iowa Hawkeyes Betting Odds, Picks & Predictions

2022 IOWA HAWKEYES BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW

The Hawkeyes posted a 10-win season in 2021, and after a 23-20 win over Penn State in early October, Iowa football was ranked in the Top 5. However, a 24-7 loss at home to Purdue, followed by a 20-point blowout at Wisconsin forced the Hawkeyes to tamp down expectations tremendously.

The team recovered for four wins in four tries in November, qualifying for the Big Ten Championship Game. However, Iowa wasn't quite ready for prime time, as Michigan routed the Hawkeyes 42-3 in an ugly show, sending Iowa off to the Citrus Bowl. Iowa then fell 20-17 against Kentucky to push at most shops. Overall, though, it was successful season for Iowa Football.

All of the above is the good news, mostly. The bad news is that RB Tyler Goodson, who gobbled up 1,151 rushing yards and six scores during the regular season, declared for the NFL Draft. He was also a nice safety valve with soft hands catching the ball out of the backfield. RBs Gavin Williams and Leshon Williams, who are not related, look to be the next big things. Leshon Williams has been receiving plenty of praise as the next possible workhorse and complete back in a long line of strong, solid runners in Iowa Football history.

The Hawkeyes also lost All-American C Tyler Linderbaum to the NFL, too. The good news for either QBs Spencer Petras or Alex Padilla is that TE Sam LaPorta (46-548-2) is back, and he is a solid weapon. WRs Arland Bruce IV (21-185-1) and Keagan Johnson (18-352-2) had big roles as freshmen, and should see an uptick in production in 2022.

The defense is nasty, and carried the Hawkeyes for most of last season. While DB Dane Belton is gone, and what a great name for someone who belts opposing receivers, Iowa has plenty of talent carrying over. CB Matt Hankins and S Jack Koerner, as well as CB Riley Moss, are each standouts. LB Jack Campbell is also back, and not only did he lead the team with 143 tackles, he led the nation in 2021.

The non-conference schedule isn't terribly daunting, and Iowa gets rival Iowa State at home. A 4-0 start is expected before the conference schedule kicks in. A rematch against Michigan in early October, looking for revenge after the embarrassing title game defeat. A road trip to Ohio State will be tough, and a trip to Purdue is also difficult. But the home schedule has some winnable games, and this has the look for at least an eight-win team. At plus-money, Iowa is worth taking for the OVER in wins. With a potential 4-0 start, this team would simply have to play .500 ball in October and November, and that's easily doable.

IOWA HAWKEYES ODDS TO WIN BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP

+1600

The Hawkeyes were much more stacked last season, and won the Big Ten West Division. Iowa had its best chance at winning the conference title, and ended up losing by 39 points. It's not hard to envision a scenario where Iowa makes a run to the title game again, likely only having to get by Wisconsin, whom it gets at home. But to win it? Iowa isn't topping Ohio State or Michigan, or even Penn State from the East. It just isn't happening. A return trip to Indianapolis likely results in another dragging.

IOWA HAWKEYES ODDS TO WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

+8000

The last time Iowa could lay claim to a national championship in football is 1960. This team has lost at least two games in every season since going 10-1-1 in 1991. They're not going to qualify for the College Football Playoff anytime soon, and therefore there is no reason to give this prop a second thought.

IOWA HAWKEYES 2022 HEISMAN CONTENDERS & ODDS

Spencer Petras (QB) +10000

Sam Laporta (TE) +10000

Petras? Just no. He is a caretaker in the offense, and nothing more. Petras operated behind an All-American center with a 1,000-yard rusher to hand off to last season. Both are gone, and it wouldn't be surprising to see Petras split time with Padilla. Laporta is a nice looking tight end and NFL prospect. However, a tight end has never won the Heisman Trophy, and that's not about to change anytime soon.
