COLORADO AVALANCHE vs. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS PREDICTIONS

The Avalanche picked up the win over the Penguins Saturday afternoon in the Mile High City in the front end of the back-to-back set.

After a scoreless first period, Mikko Rantanen opened the scoring midway through the second period before Sidney Crosby responded at 14:46 to level the game at 1-1. Nicolas Aube-Kubel answered back with a go-ahead goal just 20 seconds later, as the Avs led 2-1. Mike Matheson leveled the game at 15:07 of the third period to make it 2-2, but again, the Avs responded quickly, as Devon Toews notched the game-winning goal just 27 seconds after Matheson tied it. Darcy Kuemper made 38 saves to outduel Tristan Jarry, who stopped 35 of the 38 shots he faced.

So after an entertaining matinee game in Denver, what can these teams do for an encore? Expect another tight game, with the Pens likely returning the favor.

COLORADO AVALANCHE BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 49-14-6
  • ATS: 34-35
  • O/U: 35-29-5

The Avalanche picked up the 3-2 win against the Penguins, its third consecutive victory. Colorado is 4-0-1 across the past five games, too, and it has lost in regulation just once in the past 10 games, going 8-1-1 since a 2-0 loss at Carolina on March 10.

The Avalanche are 13-5 in the past 18 games on the road, while going 7-2 in the past nine games against the Metropolitan Division. Colorado is 35-16 in the past 51 games against Eastern Conference teams, too, while going 5-1 in the past six against teams with a winning overall mark. However, the Avs are 2-5 in the past seven as an underdog, while going 2-5 in the past seven as a road 'dog. In addition, they're 2-6 in the past eight in the back end of a home-and-home situation.

For totals, the UNDER is 4-0 in the past four games overall, while going 4-1 in the past five on the road. The UNDER is 12-2-2 in the past 16 against teams with a winning record. However, the OVER is 5-2 in the past seven as an underdog, while going 6-2-1 in the past nine against the Eastern Conference, and 9-3 in the past 12 against Metropolitan Division clubs.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS BETTING ANALYSIS

Straight Up - SU, Against the Spread - ATS, Over-Under (O/U)

  • SU: 41-19-10
  • ATS: 35-35
  • O/U: 34-33-3

The Penguins split their two-game road trip against Minnesota and Colorado, and they're just 2-3-1 across the past six games overall. However, Pittsburgh has won four of the past five games on home ice, including a 5-2 win over Vegas on March 11 in the most recent meeting at home against a Western Conference team.

The Pens have won 14 of the past 20 games against the Western Conference, while going 19-7 in the past 26 against Central Division teams.

Pittsburgh has hit the OVER at an 8-3-1 in the past 12 home games, while going 7-3-1 in the past 11 outings as a home favorite. On the flip side, the UNDER is 4-1 in the past five against the West, and against the Central.

COLORADO AVALANCHE vs. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS CONCLUSION

The Avalanche won the front end of the home-and-home with a narrow 3-2 win in Denver. Now, the Pens look to return the favor, and the trends are on their side. The Avalanche have won just three of the past 10 trips to the Steel City, while the home team has cashed in five of the past six meetings in this series. And, as mentioned, the Avs are 2-6 in the past eight in the back end of a home-and-home situation.

This was a well-played game in Denver, and there's no reason to believe we won't have another lower-scoring game with the home side coming out on top by a narrow margin.
