2022 APPALACHIAN STATE MOUNTAINEERS BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW

Appalachian State returns for the 2022 season after going 10-4 SU and winning the Sun Belt East division last season. The Mountaineers came up just short, losing to Louisiana in the Sun Belt Championship game. Good news for Appalachian State is they will have 13 starters returning from last season as well as head coach Shawn Clark who is 20-7 SU in his three seasons as the Mountaineers head coach. Their schedule will be a bit more challenging this season and will start off against North Carolina and Texas A&M. However, with the amount of talent they have returning I expect them to go over their win total of 8.5 games (-110).

While Appalachian State has plenty of talent returning this season, they also lost their fair share of guys. The top three receivers from last season are all gone, leaving Christian Wells (12 catches, 243 Yards) as the top target for quarterback Chase Brice (3,337 Yards, 27 TD’s). On the defensive side of the ball, the Mountaineers lost five of their top seven tacklers from last season.Their two outside linebackers, Nick Hampton and Brendan Harrington will be returning and will need to take on bigger roles to lead the next wave of incoming players.

Appalachian State has won nine or more games in every season since 2015. I do not anticipate that streak to end this season. With a head coach, quarterback, and plenty of other talent returning I expect them to win nine to 11 games. One could argue that Appalachian State to win the Sun Belt Championship (+250) offers more value than the win total, but this will be an extremely competitive conference and that just isn’t enough juice for me.

Appalachian State has the best odds to win the Sun Belt championship, but as mentioned before this is not enough juice for me in what will be a competitive conference. Is it a bad bet? No, not by any means but to me there are four legit contenders to win the Sun Belt East division let alone the entire conference. Those teams being Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, and Marshall. Could not blame someone at all for taking this bet, but I see much more value in Coastal Carolina (+650) and Marshall (+800) to win the conference.

Like every other team in this conference, it is a bit of a fantasy to think a team from the Sun Belt will not only make it to but win the National Championship game. However, if the committee were to give any team from the Sun Belt the go-ahead it would be Appalachian State due to their history. I mean who doesn’t remember them knocking off Michigan in 2007 after a last second blocked field goal. Not the smartest play here, but if I were to back a team from this conference to win the National Championship game it would be Appalachian State.
