2021 Duke Blue Devils Football Betting Predictions

2021 Duke Blue Devils Betting Odds, Predictions, Preview

Nothing seemed to go right for Duke in 2020. In fact, Duke's best performance of the season might have been it the opener, falling 27-13 at Notre Dame in a hard-fought game. It was all downhill after that, opening 0-4. They ended up winning at Syracuse on Oct. 10, and blowing out Charlotte Oct. 31 in a non-conference game, but those were the only two successes. Duke lost by 11 or more points in eight of its nine losses, and by a touchdown or more in all of the setbacks. They're now 7-16 in the past two seasons after a modicum of success, especially for Duke, from 2012-18, featuring six bowl trips.

The good news is that Duke has one of the better tailbacks in the ACC in RB Mataeo Durant, as he gobbled up an impressive 6.8 yards per tote last season. Unfortunately for head coach David Cutcliffe and his offense, QB Chase Brice pulled up stakes and elected to transfer to Appalachian State. Brice and Durant were one of a few bright spots on an offense which averaged just 22.0 PPG in ACC play last season, while garnering just 4.85 yards per offensive play. Brice was probably tired of peeling himself off the ground at Wallace Wade, as Duke allowed a whopping 37 sacks in 2020, while turning it over 39 times. Redshirt freshman QB Luca Diamont figures to get a shot under center.

The defense was in shambles for most of the season, too, yielding an ugly 38.1 PPG, and opposing offenses gouged the Blue Devils for 6.3 yards per play in 2020. That includes 213.2 rushing yards allowed per outing. That has to change dramatically, or it's going to be another long season off of NC 147 in Durham this season. Honestly, it probably will be anyway, even with some modest gains on defense.

We'll find out a lot about Duke in Game 1. They opener at Charlotte on a Friday night. They roughed up the 49ers in Durham last season, now the 49ers look to return the favor. If the Blue Devils lose that one, they will easily eclipse the UNDER on wins. I think Duke pulls it out, however, and wins against FCS North Carolina A&T the following week. The Blue Devils have a toss-up game against Northwestern, a game they'll likely be slight underdogs at home. Duke also has a winnable game against Kansas to close the September schedule.

It's conceivable that after the non-conference slate the Blue Devils are 2-2 or 3-1 SU, but can they win a game in conference? The answer is likely no. It would be nice to see fellow future cellar-dweller Syracuse on the schedule, or even Boston College. At least the Dukies avoid the likes of Clemson, Florida State and N.C. State, but they'll still have their hands full with anybody.

Duke Odds to win 2021 ACC Championship

Yes +10000

Duke has one more appearance in the ACC Championship Game than rival NC State, and the same amount of appearances as Miami, North Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest. That's the good news. The bad news is that they're not going to add to that total this season.

Duke didn't make the NCAA Tournament in 2020, and they're not going to the football playoff, either. Tough times in Durham, eh?
