2022 GEORGIA SOUTHERN EAGLES BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW

Former USC head coach Clay Helton will look to turn things around at Georgia Southern after the Eagles went 3-9 SU overall last season. Helton will inherit an offense with eight starters returning from last season as well as six back on defense. Sixth year Buffalo transfer Kyle Vantrease will take command of the offense this season and is much needed as the Eagles QB’s combined for five touchdowns and 12 interceptions last season. Leading rusher Logan Wright is gone, but juniors Gerald Green and Jalen White will lead the backfield after rushing for a combined 800 yards and 9 touchdowns last season.

Georgia Southern’s schedule does not give them the benefit of the doubt. Realistically I see the Eagles going 2-6 SU in conference play with wins against Old Dominion and South Alabama. This would mean Georgia Southern has to go 3-1 SU in out of conference play to cover their win total of four and a half. It is doable, but those are the first four games of the season, and it will take a couple of weeks for this team to find a groove with a new head coach and QB.

Unless Clay Helton is some sort of magician, I am not confident Georgia Southern will cover their win total. This was not a good football team last season with averages of 147.1 passing yard per game, 191.3 rushing yards per game, and 20.3 points per game while allowing opponents 31.4. With a tough schedule ahead, I am thinking a 4-8 SU season is in store for the Eagles. Best bet here is to take under the win total of four and a half.

Georgia Southern should make improvements from last season but to win the Sun Belt championship after going 3-9 SU would be quite the achievement. However, out of the worst teams in the conference last season Georgia Southern has the most potential to make such an impressive turnaround. I would not put a full unit on it, but if you are looking for a realistic long shot Georgia Southern would be the play in the Sun Belt Conference.
