2022 INDIANA HOOSIERS BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW
The Hoosiers were unable to build upon their 2020 success during the COVID season which saw Indiana top out at No. 7 in The Associated Press' Top 25 rankings. IU was ranked No. 17 heading into the preseason, but we quickly learned that 2021 was going to be a disaster for Indiana football. The team lost 10 games, most since a 1-11 season back in 2011. Oh well, back to the drawing board.
QB Michael Penix Jr. saw enough in Bloomington, jumping to Washington via the transfer portal. The portal helped IU, however, as head coach Tom Allen managed to grab QB Connor Bazelak from Missouri to take the reins of the offense.
Bazelak will not have the dependable TE Peyton Hendershot or WR Ty Fryfogle to rely upon. Those two were big-time options for Penix in the past. The team did add RB Shaun Shivers from Auburn via the portal, so perhaps the offense will be a little more balanced in 2022. JUCO transfer Cam Camper and portal incoming WR Emery Simmons figure to have a big role from the jump.
The defense has been strong in recent seasons, although it certainly had a backslide in 2021 with 33.3 points per game allowed. Defensive coordinator Chad Wilt will be tasked with the turnaround. The cupboard isn't completely bare, as CB Tiawan Mullen is above-average, especially when healthy, and S Devon Matthews is strong, too. The defensive line and linebacking corps has some big-time question marks, so we'll see if some new pieces can come in and make an impact after leaving other programs.
Indiana has a pretty tough non-conference schedule, sans the Idaho game. Western Kentucky has been a decent mid-level team, and Cincinnati was in the CFP last season, although it suffered a lot of losses. The conference schedule opens immediately with Illinois at 'The Rock', and trips to Ohio State and Michigan State won't be easy. The good news is the Hoosiers miss Iowa and Wisconsin in the crossover games. Bazelak will help the Hoosiers offense be better, but the front seven for the defense will struggle. Going Over 4.5 Wins is likely not happening.

This team has to contend with Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State in the Big Ten East Division. It's not going to go terribly well. Perhaps IU finds a way to upend one of those teams, but it's going to have several losses. If Indiana were able to attain bowl eligibility, that would be a huge win. A championship isn't going to happen, though.

Perhaps if this were basketball, and we took a time machine back to 1990 or before, we could talk championship. National championship and Indiana football in the same sentence makes you giggle a little. This isn't a football school, and it will simply be pleased with making a mid-tier bowl.
INDIANA HOOSIERS 2022 HEISMAN CONTENDERS & ODDS
Connor Bazelak (QB) +10000
Bazelak has the chance to come in and pick up right where Penix left off for the Indiana offense. MPJ was hurt in 2021, and expectations aren't terribly high for the Mizzou transfer. He could put up some decent numbers, but he isn't going to suddenly become a Heisman-quality quarterback. If he was that good, Mizzou would've found a way to make him a star in the SEC. He is serviceable, that's it.
