2022 LOUISVILLE CARDINALS BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW

The Cardinals posted a 4-4 conference record and a 6-6 regular-season record in 2021, surpassing expectations a little bit. Now, Louisville looks to build on that season and stay in the bowl picture in the ACC in 2022.

Despite a bowl game appearance, the Louisville faithful want more, and head coach Scott Satterfield is having the heat turned up a little bit on his job future. He needs a winning season to beat back the growing throng of detractors.

The good news for Satterfield is that QB Malik Cunningham is back, and he is a tremendous dual-threat option. He completed 62.0% of his pass attempts for 2,734 yards, 18 touchdowns and just six interceptions while running for a team-high 968 yards and 19 scores. Cunningham is electric, and a nightmare for opposing defenses and coordinators.

Cunningham needs help, however, and the team saw its top two receivers leave, as well as receivers coach Gunter Brewer bolting for Maryland. WR Tyler Hudson transfers in from Central Arkansas after winning the Atlantic Sun Conference player of the year, and WR Dee Higgins is an addition through the portal from the University of Miami. RB Tiyon Evans transfers in from Tennessee to give the team an upgrade in the run game, too.

The defense is a patchwork of former high-end prospects and dudes with injury history. If defensive coordinator Bryan Brown can find the right combination, the Cardinals could be better on that side of the ball. DL Jermayne Lole was a nice get in the portal from Arizona State, and DE Ashton Gillotte could be special if he can stay healthy. DE YaYa Diaby is also a disrupter.

The schedule starts off with a pair of road games, which is formidable, but winnable. It's certainly not outside the realm of possibility that the Cards could open 3-2 or 4-1 with a game against an FCS foe, albeit one of the top teams at that level, remaining. With Cunningham, this is a difficult team to handle, especially at home. At the least, this is a team with five-win potential, and at best, it is a team with seven-win potential. I'll go down the middle and say six. Play the OVER lightly.

LOUISVILLE CARDINALS ODDS TO WIN ACC CHAMPIONSHIP

+2500

The Cardinals might exceed the projected win total by a skosh, but this isn't a team which is fixing to tick off league titles anytime soon. Cunningham is good, but he can't do it alone, and the defense has plenty of question marks.

LOUISVILLE CARDINALS ODDS TO WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

+50000

Louisville didn't win a national title with the likes of Teddy Bridgewater or Malik Jackson under center, and it has just five 10-win seasons, with two under Bobby Petrino, two under Charlie Strong and one under Howard Schnellenberger. Notice whose name is missing? Yeah, Satterwhite. His best campaign was 8-5 in 2019, so a national title isn't happening. Baby steps. Just get a bowl win first, and build from there.

LOUISVILLE CARDINALS 2022 HEISMAN CONTENDERS & ODDS

Malik Cunningham (QB) +5000

Tiyon Evans (RB) +20000

Surprisingly, Cunningham and Evans are each listed with Heisman odds, but only the quarterback has a legitimate shot. He is an impressive dual-threat and a poor man's Malik Jackson. In fact, the two are friends from the time Cunningham redshirted in 2017, Jackson's final collegiate season in the 'Ville. Could Cunningham follow in Jackson's (2016) Heisman footsteps? It's possible, but not likely. Louisville would have to be a lot better than 6-6, or even 7-5, in the regular season, and that just doesn't look likely.
