2021 Louisville Cardinals Football Betting Predictions

June 14, 2021

2021 Louisville Cardinals Betting Odds, Predictions, Preview

The Cardinals did not have a very good season in 2020, stumbling to a 4-7 record. They did finish up strong, posting home wins against Syracuse and Wake Forest in November and December, so perhaps that will serve as some sort of a springboard into 2021.

The bad news is that the Cards suffered seven losses, but four of those setbacks were by seven or fewer points. So they weren’t as far away from a winning season as some might think. The good news is that QB Malik Cunningham is back, and he has a serviceable offensive line returning to help keep him upright. Unfortunately for the signal caller, WR Tutu Atwell is now in the NFL, and WR Dez Fitzpatrick and RB Javian Hawkins have moved along as well.

On the defensive side of the football, LB Dorian Etheridge was a tackling machine, but he elected to play on Sundays, too. It will be difficult for the Cardinals D to continue the improvement it showed last season. They allowed a ridiculous 33.4 PPG in 2019, but they slashed that to just 26.6 PPG allowed in 2020.

As far as the schedule is concerned, Miami, North Carolina and Virginia Tech do not appear on the slate, so that’s great news. And while the Cards likely have very little chance against Clemson, at least they get them at home on Nov. 6.

The slate opens Monday, Sept. 6 in a neutral-site game against Lane Kiffin’s improved Mississippi side. They have a short turnaround, but they should be OK in what is likely to be a rebound game against FCS Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 11.

They have another tough out of conference game against UCF on Sept. 17, before opening the conference schedule with trips to Florida State and Wake Forest. Louisville started out 1-4 last season, and it’s conceivable they could duplicate that this season.

Louisville should get on track with a bit with home games against Virginia and Boston College, before a tough trip to N.C. State. It gets worse, as Clemson then visits, but they have three winnable games to wrap the season against Syracuse, at Duke and against Kentucky.

Realistically, Louisville has the tools to be a bowl team, but winning six games will be a struggle. If they can get to six games, that’s still a slam-dunk UNDER bet, and I just don’t see this team winning eight. At worst, you push.

Louisville Odds to win 2021 ACC Championship

Yes +2500

The Cardinals have some firepower on offense, and some decent working parts on defense. However, they’re not in the same league with Clemson, as far as talent, and N.C. State and Boston College should be clear of Louisville as well. The Cards will be fighting to secure a bowl berth, not playing for conference titles.

Louisville Odds to Win 2021-22 College Football Playoff

Yes +50000

Louisville just doesn’t have the talent across the board to make a realistic push for playoff spot, and it might be a number of years before the Cardinals can think that big.

Louisville 2021 Heisman Contenders & Odds

Malik Cunningham +5000

Cunningham was sharp last season, throwing for 2,617 yards with 64.1 percent of his passes completed. He also tossed 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions, while pulling it down and running for 609 yards and seven scores. However, the loss of Atwell on the wing doesn’t help his cause, and he needs to cut his mistakes down considerably. A shot at the Heisman is unlikely.
