2021 Maryland Terrapins Football Betting Predictions

2021 Maryland Terrapins Betting Odds, Predictions, Preview

Maryland ended up getting just five total games in last season, as COVID either shut them down and one of their opponents. It was a trying time, but it wasn't without some good moment. After a 43-3 thrashing at Northwestern on Oct. 24 in the season opener, the Terps bounced back with a thrilling 45-44 overtime victory over Minnesota. They followed with a stunning 35-19 road victory against Penn State, and the Terrapins looked to be in good shape heading into their matchup with Ohio State. However, that's when COVID struck the program.

The Terps had COVID-19 cases within the program and quarantines, and the Michigan State game was sacked Nov. 21 due to 15 players and seven staff members, including head coach Mike Lockley, testing positive within seven days of the game.

The Terms finally returned to action after a three-week layoff and they were knocked around by Indiana by a 27-11 score on Nov. 28 at Bloomington. It would be the last time we saw QB Taulia Tagovailoa, the Michigan game Dec. 5 was wiped out due to COVID-19 concerns within the Wolverines team, and then Tagovailoa reportedly experienced a bout with COVID. That forced him out of what ended up being the regular season finale. Walk-on QB Eric Najarian started against Rutgers, and did well enough, but the Terps came up short in overtime, 27-24.

And yep, the Dec. 19 game against Michigan State was wiped out due to a second coronavirus outbreak within the program, so they had to settle with a 2-3 record and just five games played.

All of that sounds terrible, with some glimmers of hope mixed in. COVID has improved tremendously since last fall, the offseason was solid for Maryland, and the Terps got in a spring practice. Tagovailoa reportedly was sharp during the spring drills, and Locksley reportedly locked down a strong recruiting class. However, RB Jake Funk has moved on, and he was one of the top offensive players last season. The Terps also need better O-line play after coughing up 16 sacks in just the five games.

On defense, Maryland gave up a ridiculous 230 yards per game on the ground, and they managed just four takeaways. All of those numbers need to improve quite a bit. The good news is edge rusher Durell Nchami is back in College Park, and the secondary is in good shape with DBs Nick Cross and Tarheeb Still. True freshmen LBs Branden Jennings and Terrence Lewis join Ruben Hyppolite II to bolster that group.

Maryland's schedule is a bit difficult, as they have crossover games with Iowa and Minnesota which look daunting, and they must travel to Ohio State. The non-conference schedule also features a date with West Virginia, which will be tough. This will be a team which hangs in a lot of games, but struggles just to get to six wins and bowl eligibility. My inclination would be to go UNDER 6 (-125), as there are just too many holes and question marks, although improvement could easily occur.

Preseason Best Bet: Under 6 Wins (-125)

Maryland Odds to win 2021 Big 10 Championship

Yes +4000

Maryland is in the same division as Ohio State and Penn State. They'll be lucky to get out of the lower half of the East Division standings. They're not championship timber.

Maryland Odds to Win 2021-22 College Football Playoff

Yes +50000

Maryland isn't going to be competing for a playoff spot anytime soon. They'd be pleased to just qualify for a bowl, as that would mark a successful season after last year's tumult.

Maryland 2021 Heisman Contenders & Odds

Taulia Tagovailoa +10000

Tagovailoa isn't his brother, and he isn't going to follow in Tua's runner-up finish in Heisman voting in New York City in 2018. That doesn't suggest he isn't a good quarterback or in line for a good season, but he just isn't marquee.
