2022 MEMPHIS TIGERS BETTING ODDS, PREDICTIONS, PREVIEW

Seth Henigan was a pleasant surprise under center for Memphis in 2021. Henigan was expected to be a backup as a freshman, but injury thrust him into the starting role, and he thrived in that spot. He had some issues with his accuracy, yet he completed almost 60% of his passes for 3,322 yards with 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions to be one of the top performing freshmen quarterbacks nationally. That has the Tigers thinking they can challenge heavyweights UCF, Cincinnati, and Houston.

Memphis had a middle-of-the-pack offense last year in terms of SP+. The Tigers lost standout receiver Calvin Austin III and sixth-senior Sean Dykes, so Henigan will have to find new targets in the passing game. Javon Ivory is the leading returning receiver with 29 receptions for 413 yards and three scores as a sophomore.

The good news is that the ground game figures to be much better in 2022. Memphis averaged just 4.0 YPC last season, but the Tigers return three starters on the offensive line and add a very experienced player in Austin MyersBrandon Thomas was explosive and averaged 5.8 YPC as the leading rusher last season, and Memphis also brought in Jay Ducker from Northern Illinois after Ducker ran for 1,184 yards (5.4 YPC) as a freshman last season.

The Tigers have been largely mediocre on defense over the last several seasons. Memphis’ best recent year on this side of the ball came in 2019 when the team allowed 26.4 PPG and 384 YPG, but the defense has allowed at least 400 YPG in every other season since 2015.

Quindell Johnson is the leader of this defense and earned First Team All-AAC honors in 2021. The safety was the second-leading tackler on Memphis and also had 11 pass breakups. That should make the secondary the strength of this defense, and Memphis allowed just 7.0 YPA last season.

Only three starters return in the front seven, and that could be an issue against the run-heavy teams in the AAC like UCF, Tulane, and Navy. Memphis was able to fill some holes in the transfer portal though, adding Geoffrey Cantin-Arku from Syracuse and Tyler Murray from Charlotte.

MEMPHIS TIGERS ODDS TO WIN AAC CHAMPIONSHIP

+850

The Tigers catch a break this season as they don’t have to face defending AAC champions Cincinnati. Memphis also gets to host Houston and UCF, and the Tigers get to play the Knights after a bye week to boot. That gives this team decent value to win the conference at almost 10-1.

MEMPHIS TIGERS ODDS TO WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

+50000

No Group of Five team is going to compete for the College Football Playoff without multiple wins over quality Power Five programs. Memphis’ non-conference schedule only includes one P5 opponent (Mississippi State) alongside Arkansas State, North Texas, and North Alabama, so that makes it extremely unlikely the Tigers would earn consideration from the CFP Selection Committee even if they ran the table.

MEMPHIS TIGERS 2022 HEISMAN CONTENDERS & ODDS

Seth Henigan (QB) +50000

A promising freshman season has made Seth Henigan one of the long shots to win the Heisman Trophy, but Henigan will be hard-pressed to post big numbers without his two best targets from last year. Memphis will likely run the ball a lot more often in 2022 as well. That will make this offense more balanced, but it won’t give Henigan the stats necessary to make a dark horse run at the Heisman.
